Doom metal é um género musical que se ramificou do heavy metal. Surgido no início da década de 80 ele caracteriza-se por criar uma atmosfera de escuridão. Sua principal influência foram os primeiros álbuns da banda Black Sabbath, que é considerada a precursora do estilo.

Precursores
O primeiro álbum do grupo musical Black Sabbath, homônimo, lançado no final da década de 1960, é considerado por muitos o precursor desse estilo. A banda Pentagram, também da mesma época, é considerada outra das precursoras do doom metal.

História
O estilo músical seguiu no início da década de 80 com as bandas Trouble e Saint Vitus que possuiam grande influência da banda Black Sabbath. Lembrando que Black Sabbath era uma banda de heavy metal de 1968, considerada uma das precursoras de todo ou quase todo o heavy metal, ela mesmo ajudou na criação de diversos esstilos musicais.
Em 1986 a banda Candlemass lançou seu álbum Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, considerado por muitos um divisor de águas do estilo. Esse álbum mescla as influências do Black Sabbath com tendências mais modernas do metal. No começo da década de 1990 a banda Cathedralde Lee Dorrian (ex-Napalm Death), lançou os álbuns Forest of Equilibrium (1991) e The Ethereal Mirror (1993), que também são considerados clássicos do doom metal.
No final dos anos 1980 foram surgindo uma nova leva de bandas que misturavam doom metal com death metal. As que tiveram mais destaque inicialmente foram duas bandas de death metal: os Asphyx, influenciado pelo Candlemass e o Autopsy, influenciado pelo Trouble. Tanto, respectivamente, o EP The Rack (1987) como o disco Severed Survival (1989) antecipam os lançamentos do Northern Doom (Anathema, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost), tidos pelo senso comum como os primeiros a misturar o death com o doom.
No início da década de 1990 surgiram novas bandas de doom metal. Estas bandas mesclavam ao doom metal, diversas influências do death metal, um estilo que estava se popularizando na época. Bandas como Winter, Thergothon e diSEMBOWELMENT fundaram as bases do que seria o doom metal moderno.
As bandas que mais se destacaram neste estilo foram as britânicas My Dying Bride, Anathema e Paradise Lost, que utilizaram elementos característicos do death metal, como:
- Vocal gutural.
- Power Chords dissonantes.
- os Riffs de palhetada veloz do death metal.
- uma afinação ultra-grave nos instrumentos de corda.
- uso constante de pedal duplo no bumbo da bateria.
Assim, criaram o doom/death metal.
A característica mais importante do doom/death metal são os riffs lentos, inspirados em trabalhos de bandas como o Black Sabbath.
No doom "clássico", são utilizadas, com freqüência, escalas menores e pentatônicas (sendo essa última a mola mestre do Blues).
Já no doom/death metal há também a utilização da escala cromática, atonal, que é uma herança do death metal. Essa ausência de tonalidadeaumenta a agressividade do doom/death metal em relação ao doom metal dos anos 1980.
Nos anos 90 surgiu a banda Earth, que se caracterizou por fazer uma forma pesada de doom metal, conhecida hoje como "Drone Doom".
O final dos anos 90 deu espaço a muitos experimentos no doom metal, criando diversos subgêneros do estilo. O "atmospheric doom metal" foi um subgênero desenvolvido por bandas como The 3rd and the Mortal (que foi uma das primeiras bandas de doom metal a possuir vocais femininos como parte integral de sua música) e o Theatre of Tragedy (que foi uma das primeiras bandas a usar uma vocalista soprano em conjunto ao vocal gultural masculino e que foi chamado de metal "Bela e a Fera").
Algumas bandas que iniciaram sua carreira como bandas de doom/death metal (como a banda holandesa The Gathering) foram, com o passar do tempo, fazendo experimências e mudando sua sonoridade até se distanciarem do doom metal. O Theatre of Tragedy foi uma das primeiras bandas a mesclar o doom metal com o gótico e, atualmente, possuem uma maciça influência de música eletrônica em seu trabalho.
Subgéneros
Durante a década de 90, novos subgêneros do doom metal surgiram, dos quais podemos destacar:
- Atmospheric doom metal: Este subgênero se caracteriza basicamente pela criação de atmosferas obscuras, misteriosas, melancólicas e depressivas, com uso intensivo de teclados e vocais femininos integrais.
- Algumas bandas: The 3rd and the Mortal, Ava Inferi, Avrigus, Chalice, The Gathering, Öröm.
- Doom/death metal: É um gênero que mescla o doom metal clássico com algumas características do death metal, como o vocal gutural.
- Algumas bandas: Anathema, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Amorphis, Saturnus, Swallow The Sun.
- Drone doom: Estilo mais minimalista do doom metal. Caracteriza-se por ser marcado por poucos riffs de guitarra e com músicas bastante longas.
- Algumas bandas: Earth, Burning Witch, Sunn O))).
- Doom metal tradicional: Estilo que engloba as primeiras bandas de doom metal, que possuem grande infuência do heavy metal dos anos 70 e 80, este estilo também é chamado de "doom metal tradicional" ou "doom metal clássico".
- Algumas bandas: Candlemass, Saint Vitus, The Obsessed, Solitude Aeternus.
- Funeral doom metal: Estilo bastante lento, pesado e com vocais e guitarras bastante distorcidos. Este subgênero dá ênfase à lentidão e ao peso em suas formas mais extremas. O nome do estilo é uma referência ao andamento de uma marcha fúnebre, que é bastante lento. O vocal gutural fica com destaque bastante pequeno em comparação a outros estilos musicais, sendo considerado no nível de um outro instrumento, que ajuda a aumentar o a atmosfera arrastada da música. Este é o estilo mais depressivo e melancólico presente no doom metal.
- Algumas bandas: Worship, Thergothon, Pantheist, Skepticism, Mournful Congregation, Shape of Despair, Funeral.
- Black funeral doom metal: Estilo que mescla características do black metal com o funeral doom, como os vocais gulturais gritados, sussurrados ou chorados, este estilo de funeral doom é mais baseado na atmosféra da música, com uso maior de teclados e destaque menor da guitarra e dos outros instrumentos.
- Algumas bandas: Nortt, Dictator, Fear of Eternity, Dolorian, Funeral Mourning.
- Gothic/doom metal: Estilo que mescla o doom metal com a temática e música gótica. Nesse estilo é usado, vocais líricos femininos em junção a vocais gulturais masculinos, e em algúmas bandas é comum o uso de instrumentos sinfônicos, acústicos e erúditos.
- Algumas bandas: Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania (no álbum Widow's Weeds), Within Temptation (no álbum Enter), Type O Negative (no álbum Bloody Kisses), Virgin Black, Draconian
- Proto-doom: Nome utilizado para classificar as bandas consideradas precursoras do doom metal.
- Algumas bandas: Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Bedemon.
- Sludge doom: Estilo que mescla características do stoner doom com hardcore punk.
- Algumas bandas: Eyehategod, Crowbar, Grief, Callisto.
- Stoner doom: Doom metal com influências psicodélicas e de stoner rock.
- Algumas bandas: Cathedral, Eternal Elysium, Acrimony, Electric Wizard, High on Fire.
- Power doom: É a fusão do doom metal com o power metal. É caracterizado por ser rápido e pesado e o uso frequente de bateria de bumbo dublo (comum no power metal) e guitarras pesadas (doom tradicional dos anos 80).
- Algumas bandas: Memore Gardem, Grand Magus
- Folk doom: É a fusão do doom metal com o folk metal. Seus temas abordam a natureza, a cultura viking etc.
- Algumas bandas: Battlelore entre outras não citadas.
- Dark metal: Esse nome foi dado pela junção do black metal com o doom metal. Algumas das principais características são baterias de bumbo duplo velozes, vocais gulturais gritados ou chorados como é comum no black metal e no doom metal.

Characteristics
Instrumentation
The electric guitar, bass guitar and drum kit are the most common instruments used to play doom metal, although keyboards are occasionally used. Guitarists and bassists typically tune their instruments to very low notes and make a greater use of distortion. This produces a very 'thick' or 'heavy' guitar tone, which is one of the defining characteristics of the genre. Another defining characteristic is the consistent focus on slowtempos.
Vocals
Traditional doom metal vocalists favour clean vocals, which are often performed with a sense of despair, desperation or pain. Epic doom vocalists usually sing in an operatic style. Doom bands with extreme metal influence typically favour growled or screamed vocals, while sludge doom vocalists usually employ shouted or strained singing.
Lyrical themes
Lyrics in doom metal play a very important role. Often, they are pessimistic in nature, and include themes such as: suffering, depression, fear,grief, death and anger. While some bands write lyrics in introspective and personal ways, others convey their themes using symbolism – which may be inspired by various types of literature.
Some doom metal bands use religious themes in their music, perhaps more so than other heavy metal bands. Trouble, one of the genre's pioneers, were among the first to incorporate Christian imagery. Others have incorporated occult and pagan imagery. For many bands, the use of religious themes is for aesthetic and symbolic purposes only.
Additionally, some doom bands write lyrics about drugs or drug addiction. This is most common among stoner doom bands, who often describehallucinogenic or psychedelic experiences.
History of doom metal
Origins (1970s)
Doom metal is among the oldest forms of heavy metal, rooted in the music of early Black Sabbath, one of the first heavy metal bands. Black Sabbath's music is itself stylistically rooted in blues, but with the deliberately doomy and loud guitar playing of Tony Iommi (who often used the tritone, or "diabolus in musica", in his playing and composition), and the then-uncommon dark and pessimistic lyrics and atmosphere, they set the standards of early heavy metal and inspired various doom metal bands to come. In the early 1970s both Black Sabbath and the American band Pentagram (also as side band Bedemon) composed and performed this heavy and dark music, which would in the 1980s begin to be known and referred to as doom metal by subsequent musicians, critics and fans.
Development (1980s)
During the early-mid 1980s, bands from England and the United States contributed much to the formation of doom metal as a distinct genre. In 1982, English pioneers Pagan Altar and Witchfinder General released their debut albums; Volume 1 and Death Penalty respectively. During 1984 and 1985, three American pioneers also released their debuts; Saint Vitus released their eponymous album, Trouble released Psalm 9and Pentagram released Relentless. The Swedish Candlemass would also prove influential with their first record Epicus Doomicus Metallicus in 1986 (and prior to that, as Nemesis and the 1984 album Day of Retribution), from which the genre takes its name.
During the 1980s, doom metal was deeply underground and gathered only small circles of cult-following fans. In the 1980s, metal was dominated by the faster metal subgenres speed and thrash, and commercially by glam metal. Slower, heavier and pessimistic in its nature, doom metal bands did not receive much attention even among some die-hard metal fans of that time.

Stylistic divisions
At the beginning of the 1990s, experimentation within doom metal became widespread, and the genre diversified as a result. Today, bands who continue the style of the genre's pioneers are often referred to as traditional doom metal.
Epic doom
Epic doom is a style of doom metal that is characterized primarily by its vocal style; vocalists typically employ clean, operatic and choralsinging. Lyrics and imagery are typically inspired by fantasy or mythology, while the drumming is performed in a bombastic fashion. However, distinguishing epic doom from traditional doom may be difficult. Examples of prominent epic doom bands include Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Solstice and Doomsword.
Stoner doom
Stoner doom, stoner metal and psychedelic doom describes doom metal that incorporates psychedelicelements, to varying degrees. Stoner doom is often bass-heavy and makes much use of guitar / bass effects such as fuzz, phaser or flanger. Stoner doom could be viewed as the heavier and slower form of stoner rock, as the two styles emerged simultaneously. It was pioneered in the early–mid 1990s by bands such asKyuss, Sleep, Acid King, Electric Wizard and Sons of Otis.
Sludge doom
Sludge doom (also known as sludge metal) is a style that combines doom metal and hardcore punk. Many sludge bands compose slow and heavy songs that contain brief hardcore passages. However, some bands emphasise fast tempos throughout their music. The string instruments are heavily distorted and are often played with large amounts of feedback to produce an abrasive, sludgy sound. Drumming is often performed in typical doom metal fashion, but drummers may employ hardcore d-beat or double-kick drumming during faster passages. Vocals are usually shouted or screamed, and lyrics often focus on suffering, drug abuse, politics and anger towards society. The style was pioneered in the early 1990s by bands such as[Gloomy Sunday] Eyehategod, Crowbar, Buzzov*en, Acid Bath and Grief.
Funeral doom
Funeral doom is a style of doom metal that takes influence from both the death/doom and dark ambient genres. It is played at a very slow tempo[7] and places an emphasis on evoking a sense of emptiness and despair. Typically, electric guitars are heavily distorted and keyboardsor synthesizers are used to create a "dreamlike" atmosphere. Vocals consist of mournful chants or growls and are often in the background. Funeral doom was pioneered by Thergothon (Finland), Skepticism (Finland), Funeral (Norway), Nortt (Denmark) and Mordor(Switzerland).
Drone doom
Drone doom (also known as drone metal) is a style of doom metal that is largely defined by drones; notes or chords that are sustained and repeated throughout a piece of music. Typically, the electric guitar is performed with large amounts of reverb and feedback while vocals, if present, are usually growled or screamed. Songs are often very long and lack beat or rhythm in the traditional sense. Drone doom is generally influenced by drone music, noise music and minimalist music. The style emerged in the early 1990s and was pioneered by Earth, Boris, Dahlia's Tear and Sunn O))).
Death doom
Death doom (also known as doom death) is a style that combines the slow tempos and pessimistic atmosphere of doom metal with the deepgrowling vocals and double-kick drumming of death metal. The style emerged during the late 1980s and gained a certain amount of popularity during the 1990s. It was pioneered by bands such as Winter, Asphyx, Disembowelment, Paradise Lost, Autopsy andMy Dying Bride. Death doom subsequently gave rise to the gothic metal genre.
Black doom
Black doom (also known as blackened doom metal) is a style that combines elements of black metal and doom metal. Typically, vocals are in the form of high-pitched shrieks and guitars are played with much distortion, which is common in black metal. But the music is played at a slow tempo with a much 'thicker' guitar sound, which is common in doom metal. Lyrics often involve themes of nature, nihilism and depression. The early work of Bethlehem (Germany) and Barathrum (Finland) is generally regarded as the foundation of this style. Pure blackened doom bands are fairly rare, but Dolorian (Finland), Unholy (Finland), Ajattara (Finland), Forgotten Tomb (Italy), Nortt (Denmark) and Gallhammer(Japan) have performed in this style.
