Continuing their pillaging of the ever-fertile Providence, Rhode Island scene, 20 Buck Spin presents the self-titled debut from MEGASUS. Riding forth like thunderbolts cast from the hammer of Thor, the eight hooves of the MEGASUS burn a trail of ice across the winter sky. Combining elements of heavy metal titans like High On Fire, Slayer, Pentagram and Karp, MEGASUS have created a debut of amazing power and volume, with riff after riff of neckbreaking metal fury.

The sordid history of MEGASUS goes something like this. 4 dudes all working for Harmonix - the video game developer who brought the world’s most popular video games, Guitar Hero and Rock Band, to life - decided to get together to create a metal band of wild power. Featuring long-time Providence musicians, most notably Brian Gibson, bass-player of noise-rock duo Lightning Bolt (here showing off his own crushing drum skills), the band set out to simply have fun and write killer, memorable heavy metal songs. After having two songs, "Megasus" and "Red Lottery", both featured on this debut, placed into Rock Band and Guitar Hero 2 long before this album’s release the band has already created a large awareness of their music to lovers of these video games.

Earlier in 2009 MEGASUS self-released an extremely limited edition vinyl version of their self-titled debut, a mere 200 copies. 20 Buck Spin got hold of a copy after happening across the band online and immediately contacted them about releasing the album on CD format to a wider audience, feeling these songs shouldn't be limited to such a small run. Much more than some video game gimmick or techie side project, MEGASUS have created a debut of highly memorable, focused heavy metal to sit alongside far more established bands, and become a worthy addition to the growing 20 Buck Spin roster of doom. A mini-tour and a 2nd album are already in the planning stages.

Megasus is a heavy metal band formed in Providence, Rhode Island in 2006.

Megasus is a heavy metal band, formed by members of Lightning Bolt and ex-members ofAmazing Royal Crowns, Laurels and Scared Stiffs. In mid 2006, Ryan Lesser (Laurels),Jason "King" Kendall (Amazing Royal Crowns) and Paul Lyons (Scared Stiffs) invited Dare Matheson from Made In Mexico to play drums for a recording of "Red Lottery" as a submission for the Playstation 2 game Guitar Hero II. After recording "Red Lottery", Megasus lost Matheson and gained Lightning Bolt bassist Brian Gibson as the new full-time drummer.

General info and history

In 2009, Megasus released their first full length LP entitled Megasus and included the album's title track Megasus as a downloadable song (DLC) in the video game series Rock Band.

Members of Megasus are employees at Harmonix, creators of Rock Band, Rock Band 2,Guitar Hero, and Guitar Hero II.

Sound

The group's sound is as much influenced by heavy metal acts such as Electric Wizard andBlack Sabbath as it is by other Providence noise bands. The band's sound is driven by haphazard, non-traditional drumming and ultra-low, detuned, fuzzed guitar and bass.

A name like Megasus can only mean one thing. METAL. That's right, pounding, thrashing, ass kicking head banging metal from Providence Rhode Island, which just so happens to feature Brian from Lightning Bolt on drums. But NOT Brian Chippendale, nope, that's bass player Brian (Gibson!) pounding the skins, and hot damn, he's a pretty sick drummer for being such an insane bass player. For those of you out there that play Rock Band or Guitar Hero, odds are you've probably heard Megasus before, one of their tracks was a huge hit on one of those games, downloaded about a million times, but for us, Megasus came out of nowhere, and proceeded to pummel us into submission! Shredding classic style heavy metal, with a definite punk rock flavor, reminding us a bit of bands like Karp, that sort of punked up metal vibe, although with Megasus it's mostly the vocals, for the most part this is some seriously TRUE metal. Wild soaring leads, guitar harmonies, relentless drum pound, lots of chugging riffage, proggy arrangements, some stretches of doominess, the vocals a distorted howl, but for the most part this is just some seriously kick ass metal radness! And the packaging, we talk about amazing packaging all the time, but wow, does this take the cake, an full color eye popping outer gatefold jacket, some sort of bloody winged goat, the logo and song titles embossed and stamped with gold foil, printed inner sleeve, pressed on 180 gram swirled orange and black vinyl, comes with a poster, sticker AND a patch. As well as a full album download. Phew.

This is the debut album from filling-rattling metal Providence-based supergroup Megasus. "Swords", "Hexes/Szaadek" and "Iron Mountain" all are over six minutes long, combining slow dirge, distorted blood curdling screams, massive riffs and furious double kick pedal mayhem. At some points, I thought of a gonzo Saint Vitus. But on top of the music, this has one of the most impressive vinyl packaging ever to pass through these hands. I doubt I could withstand their live show, as whenever I see the "No Wimps" sign I always turn around and go home.

What exactly is a Megasus? According to the artwork for this self-titled album, its some sort of six-legged, bat-winged, horned and screaming equid. Pretty apt imagery for the music found therein. This is the aural equivalent of being trampled to death by mythical cloven hooves. Lets talk about the packaging shall we? These boys do it right. Gatefold jacket with gold debossing, a beastly poster (see what I did there?), a patch, a sticker and of course an MP3 card, so you can play this at maximum volume in your cubicle at your horrible, horrible job. With only 200 copies pressed onto lovely orange and black vinyl, this isn’t likely to hang around for very long.
