Hassle Records youngest signings ROLO TOMASSI are a fresh-faced bunch straight from the steel city of Sheffield, playing some of the most frenetic, insane and jaw-dropping tunes around. Holding the reputation of a fearsome energetic live show, ROLO TOMASSI visit Porto carrying the recent “Cosmology” on their backs, the follow up to their breathtaking debut “Hysterics”.
Their synth driven experimental mix of styles seems difficult to define in a single word although this time around the band looks for a more accomplished and complete sound, throwing its metal, hardcore punk and jazz influences into the blender to create more cohesive sections, rather than fencing their influences off from each other. Under the competence of M.I.A.’s producer Diplo, “Cosmology” stands out as a good example of ROLO TOMASSI’s refusal to give up on exploring new combinations of sounds.
The quintet can unleash some of the most furious, audacious and unrepentantly loud noises mixed with the bitter sweet textures that highlight Eva Spence, a frontwoman smiling as sweetly as she can howl violently in an instant. Refinement and creative condensation are undoubtedly strong qualities for a band as young as this. As a matter o fact, part of their charm is that they don’t look remotely as they sound and they sound to be more than just a bunch of technically minded punk-terrorists out to shock.
On Wednesday 24 November at Plano B, next to EAK musclecore maniacs, everyone should make a point to catch them live. We all know this sort of mayhem is always best experienced on stage.
