PAINSTYLE was born at the turn of 2005 to 2006. Bandfounder and guitarplayer CHRISTIAN HEIL (JOE) had composed an extensive archive of musical ideas and song structures. At the beginning the biggest problem was to find the perfect line-up to meet the challenges of his complex song-material. He spent a lot of time jamming with different musicians and experimenting with a variety of constellations. Two years later the search was over. This formation played several gigs before it went on producing the infamous Painstyle Rough Demo (2008).

For this production JOE invited over his friend BURKHARD SCHMITT of the hannoveranean combo HATE SQUAD to take part in some guest rehearsals in Painstyle headquarters at LANNY’S PIT. The cooperation went off pretty well.

BURKHARD’s and JOCHEN’s voices matched in such an impressive way that only after a short time all members agreed BURKHARD to join the band.

In September 2008 Drummer Markus Christ had to leave the band. PAINSTYLE was forced to look for a substitute which was anything but easy. During the next three months the band underwent a nerve-racking process in which they tested a multitude of different drummers from Germany and abroad. Eventually it failed to bring about a new formation.

In the fall of 2008, no less a drummer than MARCO MINNEMANN (KREATOR, NECROPHAGIST, EPHEL DUATH, PAUL GILBERT, H-BLOCKX, etc.) stumbled over our search-blog. He liked the music and got into contact with JOE to tell him he was interested in becoming part of the project and to make his contribution. MARCO is a world-class drummer and is surely the best choice for the job. With his incomparable style and his unmatched technical skills he breathed even more life into our songs. We’re glad we can count on his support, because we think his playing lifted PAINSTYLE to another level.

Meanwhile the band has recorded their first full length IN BLACK DESPAIR!
