Aren´t you tired of those annoying Christmas songs? They seem to be everywhere, like a shadow following your steps. In my case, it´s like a virus trying to infect my head with polyphonic melodies. Well, for every disease there´s a cure and in this case it´s a fucking good one. I present you the masters of psychedelic notes, the inventors of cosmic rhythms, the creators of hallucinatory sounds - Greek Psychedelic Progressive Black Metallers Hail Spirit Noir.

Pneuma

These guys came together in the late of 2010. Later in the end of 2011 they joined forces with Code666/Aural Music for a worldwide release of the debut album “Pneuma” in the spring of 2012. The debut was a success; both critics and listeners received the album with delight. The walk to the triumph was short. Only two years after the foundation of the band were needed for the projection of a new style bursting with character.

With Haris in the synths, Theoharis taking the guitars and vocals and Dim playing the bass and acoustic guitar the group is ready to assault your mind and leave you open-mouthed. I can´t forget of course the guest musicians whose role is imperative – Ioannis Giahoudis playing the drums and Dimitris Dimitrakopoulos, the additional vocalist. Consisting of a trio, the band mixes inspired minds and intellectual players, transforming experiments of metal in clever soundscapes.

Hail Spirit Noir is possibly one of the best things I have ever heard lately. This is new, unusual and rare. For a band that began with experiments three years ago and ended up finding a way to surprise with astonishing blends of progressive music, psychedelic melodies and black metal, I just have to bow. Some may think that something like this can´t work, such variance and dissonance of style can only be a lame attempt of creating avant-garde music. The truth is that this kind of music is an avant-garde creation but still they are wrong. The way that each style works in perfect harmony is amazing. There isn’t a single flaw in the way how organic melodies or guitar riffs similar with “the doors” sound in the middle of a progressive composition of black metal.

For me this is a solid band to conquer the podium in the album of the month category. “Oi Magoi” in English "The Magicians" is the title of their new work and the one that attracted my attention like a moth attracted by light. This album is more than music, it´s a deep conjuring of retro and psychedelic grooves that takes you in a journey that you will want to repeat again and again. The construction of something so artistic is rare nowadays and I’m very happy that bands like Hail Spirit Noir maintain such a creative and diverse playing. The details of the album are gigantic; you can listen to “Oi Magoi” hundreds of times and yet find something new. I´m really pleased with the fact that I can enjoy something really different and with huge quality, without doubt this is one of those albums that stay forever in your mind.
