Enthroned: "Sovereigns" will be a great addition to your collection!

I have been a fan of Enthroned for years. What really drew me in back in the day was the fact that in the endless seas of bland black metal. Enthroned had their own sound. They use a lot of melody, where not afraid to slow down, they used solos and they had one of the most distinctive vocalist in the entire black metal scene.
In 2006 vocalist Lord Sabathan left the band and guitarist Nornagest took over on vocals. And for me a huge part of the reason why I liked this band disappeared. And I found my interest in the band doing the same, I listened to the albums they put out, Tetra Karcist, Pentagrammaton and Obsidium. But they did not spark any interest, so it was with fairly low expectations I started listening to Sovereigns.

But I was pleasantly surprised, Sovereigns is a really cool and varied album. This is really solid stuff, and the eerie feeling is still here. And sometimes it is damn near spooky. Check out the intro to the track Feathers and flames. Absolutely epic, and then it kicks off with fast riffing and drumming, killer! And I really like how the song ends with the same spooky riff that it starts with. With this album I think Enthroned has found a very good balance and think they have found it with all aspects of the album. Harmony and disharmony is one of the aspects that first came to mind. They are using a lot of dissonant riffing which of course is nothing new in black metal but the balance between ear ripping disharmony and beautiful harmony is quit astonishing on this album. Take a listen to the part around 1 minute mark in the song The edge of agony and just rejoice in the beauty and brilliance of the interplay of the two harmonies.
Enthroned has always had a good deal of variety in their music and this album is no different. Lamp of invisible light is a prime example of this. The song meanwhile not very fast by any standard has an almost rockish quality to it, really catchy and head banging friendly. And what happens? We get an extremely beautiful ending with clean guitars and a nice melody. And just to complete the circle the next song is a real kick in the teeth of a blast fest. Holy hell this one is fast.

Moving on to the vocals, what can I say they are great, Nornagest is a great singer. Maybe it just took me a long time to get over the fact that the band changed, I don’t know. But on this album I think he is doing a fantastic job. There is a nice of mix of the classic black metal screams, more chaotic screams and spoken word parts. All in all it is great, and I think that I might have to go back and listen to the post Lord Sabathan albums again.

As with all Enthroned albums I have heard the playing is top notch and everything is tight and nice. And the same goes with the production which on Sovereigns is spot on. In is not over produced and not to raw, I think it goes hand in hand with Enthroned take on black metal, raw yet elegant. So yeah, Enthroned has really created a beats with this one, if you like them before you will like this. And if you are a black metal fan looking for something new, this will be a great addition to your collection.

Belgian black metal legion ENTHRONED will kick off their long anticipated North American tour next week! The trek will mark the band's first time on US/Canadian soil in nine years! This special leg of the Pentagrammaton World Tour 2010 will begin in Brooklyn, New York at Europa on August 4 and bludgeon its way through nearly two dozen cities before winding down at the Hostile City Deathfest in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 29. Support will come from Australian black thrashers Deströyer 666 and California death metallers Pathology as well as Black Anvil, Estuary and Cardiac Arrest on select dates. Said vocalist/guitarist Nornagest: "ENTHRONED is glad to be back in the States after nine years of absence. The US will be the first nation to witness the new face of ENTHRONED and will be the kick off of the Pentagrammaton World Tour!"

Pentagrammaton, ENTHRONED's ninth studio offering, was released earlier this year via Regain Records. ENTHRONED currently features: Nornagest (vocals/guitars), Phorgath (bass/vocals), Neraath (guitars/vocals), Garghuf (drums) and Tzelmoth (live guitars).

"Pentagrammaton is like a black metal blast from the past, an album that equally pays homage to the subgenre’s early beginnings, yet is exciting enough for today’s extreme metal. " -- Live-Metal

"Pentagrammaton is a very strong effort with numerous devastating riffs, ranging from fast blasting to heavy grooves and all in between. Vocalist Nornagest spews his occult misanthropic lyrics in a decent fashion, true to the scene. This record for sure pushed Enthroned righteously back in the position where they belong, on the forefront of black metal between names like Marduk, Immortal, Darkthrone and Gorgoroth." -- Metal Rage

"...an ordered combination of allure, darkness and power..." -- Blistering

"Pentagrammaton doesn't rely on fast paced riffs on every song and dives into a variety of melodic mid-tempo riffs in order to create a harsh and chilling atmosphere." -- Cosmos Gaming

"So much of black metal is hidden under a veil of distortion and Enthroned uncovers the veil but does not give up any of the substance that you come to expect from the genre." -- Bring On Mixed Reviews

Enthroned - Evil Church

Enthroned - Evil Church

Enter the infernal corridors of the unlight,
walking through the path haunted by ghouls and wolves.
rising from the dead and crushing their tombs,
your body starts to shake with fear,
you feel the demons clawing at your skin,
trying to pull you into their crypt.
Now, walk towards the table of hell,
and worship the call of ninnagesh,
the mighty black priest,
as you're approaching closer to the altar,
raise your hands and do the sign of the horns.

Take your dirk to cut your throat,
blood spills in the chalice
you bring and you agonize with joy
in the middle of the great inflammed pentagram.
succumb for hell, succumb for the darkness,
succumb for the evil and give your life to our lord satan.
the undeads starts to drink your damned blood
under the morbid breath of the great organ pipes,
your soul is now condamned to live in the domination of seth
to deny your weak god and take the power of evil.

Fight, kill and torture without mercy forever in honour to sin.
raise high the swords of hate, run to fight the light.
conqueror of the earthly grounds

Oooohh tormentor of the beast,
you've broken your chain made of christain lies,
you gave your faith to satan,
heard every sabbaths of the mighty priest,
sacrificed yourself upon the altar of the evil church
and finally became a faithful son of our master!
In your presence, the weak mortals stand in fear,
you're the black tormentor next to the throne of chaos.
join us, we are the agitators and invite the mothers
to sacrifice their new born children.
in the basin of the reverend of hell,
the innocent blood flows...
welcome to the evil church!
