Lycanthia - Oligarchy available now

Around this time last year, the doom stalwarts Lycanthia released their new full-length album Oligarchy independently in Australia, and now the album will get a worldwide release through Hypnotic Dirge Records. The new full-length album is available in both digipack and jewelcase formats, as well as digitally through the label's bandcamp page for $5. The Oligarchy physical album is available for $10 plus shipping in either digipack or jewel case format, features the full album lyrics and liner notes, and anyone who orders the album will also receive a free download link while they wait for their CD to arrive! The album is available for free streaming on the bandcamp link below.

Formed in 1996, Lycanthia carries with them a history spanning 17 years and are one of Australia's oldest surviving doom metal bands.

A six piece band hailing from Sydney, Lycanthia plays traditional gothic death-doom metal with a strong emphasis on atmosphere, melody, and the captivating use of alternating male growls and female soprano vocals. Comparisons could be drawn between Lycanthia and the sound found in the early "golden age" works of classic gothic doom bands such as My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Draconian, and Theatre of Tragedy.

A flagship of this particular sound is the contrast between dark, aggressive, and heavy death-doom and softer moments courtesy of female vocals, keyboards, and violin arrangements and Lycanthia does this extraordinarily well. The growls courtesy of founding member and bassist Lee Tassaker is a definite strong point of the album, and he's accompanied very nicely with the poignant female vocals from both the violinist and keyboardist, Vanessa Black and Megan Tassaker respectively.

The vocal work is complimented nicely by six very competent musicians all working towards a heavy, despairing, and powerfully melancholic sound and a production quality that does the songwriting justice. Mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Katatonia), the re-release of Oligarchy on Hypnotic Dirge comes in a digipack format with an 8 page foldout booklet.

Lycanthia is currently on a dual album launch east coast Australian tour alongside Subterranean Disposition, another doom outfit from Hypnotic Dirge Records who recently released their debut album. There are still two dates on the tour remaining in April so if you are in the area, be sure to make an appearance and enjoy a night of doom! Lycanthia will also be opening up for Eluveitie on May 25th and will also be making a trip to the US for the two day Denver Doom Fest in October.

Subterranean Disposition/Lycanthia Dual Album Launch Tour 2013

Hypnotic Dirge Records, Metalobsession.net and MMK promotions proudly presents a dual album launch for two of Australia's best Doom exports, Lycanthia and Subterranean Disposition, on their Australian east coast tour this February, March and April.

Longstanding Australian Death-Doom/Gothic Metal band Lycanthia are due to release their latest Album 'Oligarchy' in a digi-pak format, through Hypnotic Dirge Records. Their music is described as dark, aggressive and emotional sound scapes fused with classical elements. This sound is created with the use of Grim Male Vocals, mixed with Dual Female harmonies, Violins, Twin-Guitars, Bass, Drums and Keyboards/Piano. 'Oligarchy' has been described as "Pure gloom metal with emphasis on atmosphere, melody and captivating vocals" by doommantia website.

Mastered by Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studios, Oligarchy is the perfect successor to their momentous EP 'Within The Walls', and see's Lycanthia develop their musical style with greater maturity and creativity. Bassist and Vocalist, Lee Tassaker, said "we are over the moon about being signed to Hypnotic Dirge Records and cannot wait to share the stage with fellow label-mates Subterranean Disposition. It's going to be great to share the music of our new album 'Oligarchy' with everyone, at our up and coming shows in VIC, NSW and QLD, over the next few months."

Starting life as the solo recording project of Melbourne metal veteran Terry Vainoras (Order of Chaos, Damaged, Insomnius Dei, Earth, Hellspawn, The Eternal) with a sound entrenched in a mixture of equal parts Doom, Death and Sludge with hints of the Experimental, Subterranean Disposition released it’s debut album through Hypnotic Dirge Records on the 27th of October in 2012, receiving critical praise through the worldwide metal media.

Terry has recruited a stellar line up of his favourite musicians to recreate the album as a live band: Christophe Delcourt on Drums (Away the Cinders), Shaun Bryndzia on Guitar (Canyonaero) and Retch Bile on Bass (Broozer). The touring group will also feature Phoebe Pinnock (Heaven the Axe) performing her vocal contributions in Melbourne and Megan Tassaker (Lycanthia) performing the female parts in Sydney, Brisbane and Gold coast, with a guest saxophonist at each show.

Terry has said “ The guys in the band have worked incredibly hard at interpreting the recorded work, teaching me a lot about these songs in the process. We are really excited to get out and perform this material live for the first time, and to do so with such a great touring partner in Lycanthia. See you all at the shows”

Lycanthia: live video for Within These Walls

Below can be seen a video from Lycanthia live, performing the track Within These Walls from their 2006 EP of the same name.

Lycanthia is a gothic death-doom six piece band hailing from Sydney, Australia which has been active since 1996. Incorporating many diverse influences in their music, Lycanthia continues the sound found in the early "golden age" works of classic gothic doom bands Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania, My Dying Bride, and The Sins of thy Beloved, while also adding more aggressive influences.

Their latest album, "Oligarchy", was self-released by the band in 2012 and mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios (Opeth, Katatonia). Hypnotic Dirge Records is planning a re-release in digipack format in early 2013.
