HeavyHardMetalmania: Sludge

It seems that more and more post metal bands are emerging from the darkest abysses. Burweed is a post metal/sludge group born in Finland on May 2009. With six years of existence the crafty and heavy trio is going to show how sludge is supossed to sound like and presents the debut album ‘HIDE’.

Burweed’s debut full-length HIDE comes out February 20th, 2015 on Inverse Records. Hide was recorded in 2013 at Korkeakoski Studios (Insomnium, Bob Malmström). The record was mixed by Antti Loponen, the mastermind behind Consciousness Removal Project, and mastered at Audiosiege by Brad Boatright (responsible of mastering Converge, Sleep. Sunn O))) among others).

After two well acclaimed EP releases, the process of making the debut turned out to be very sweaty. Nearly two years in the making, ‘HIDE’ album was a long and difficult task – says the band.

It’s easy to understand why confidence becomes so delicate when things start to go wrong. That’s precisely when you get frustrated with everything and everyone. But it’s also a good thing when that happens because it makes you rethink, analyze and rectify the smallest details. In the end you’re just happy that it’s over, your hard work paid off and the results are positive. This was what happened with the sludgy band. After experiencing low confidence moments and with renewed spirit the band rose from uncertainty; the debut was completed and ready to assault its listeners.

Burweed is like a mixture of ‘Tool’ mystic-like melodies with ‘Mastodon’ berserk riffing and the grooviness of ‘Deftones’. Their sound is very atmospherical, the proper sound of post metal and shows a cool duality between thick distortions and gloomy melodies. In their work ‘HIDE’ you’ll be able to find slow and mid tempo rhythms, catchy and “in the face” riffs, clean guitar, psychedelic touches, deep ambients and much more. They aren’t on the verge of nothing new but they sure do know how to fucking sludge your face off.

Overall: A album to listen as a whole. There’s not a single boring moment in this album, however, you need to capture its nature by hearing it as you should – from the beginning to the end. If you like Sludge with more to it than the simple heavy and distorted this will suit you like a glove.

A fusão de estilos musicais diferentes é cada vez mais usual. Esta não é a primeira vez, este ano, que me aparecem junções de bandas e géneros. Naquilo a que me parece um movimento em rápida a ascensão, com a tentativa de fazer nascer novas “bombas” sonoras, bandas como os Entheogen optam pela mistura de diferentes tipos de metal. Isto resulta no aparecimento de subgéneros alternativos, que podem potencialmente contribuir de forma positiva para o heavy metal. Abrem-se novos caminhos para os apreciadores da música pesada, que passam a ter mais por onde escolher. Assim evolui e cresce a comunidade extrema dos metalheads.

Os Entheogen são uma espécie de Big Bang à espera de libertar toda a energia concentrada no seu núcleo. Imaginemos que no centro de um concentrado de energia, existem duas vertentes distintas, mas com o mesmo barulhento propósito. Por um lado, temos o stoner rock do grupo MG Pistol Rock e por outro lado, temos o math/post rock da banda Imakandi. A densidade destes dois estilos é tal que se libertam num concentrado homogéneo de math/sludge com toques de post e stoner rock. Esse Big Bang começou a formar-se em 2009, o ano da fusão das bandas, e depois de quatro anos de recolha de energia, implodiu e deu origem ao albúm de estreia ‘Moons of Jupiter’.

‘Moons of Jupiter’ é um albúm temático dedicado à missão STS-34 – A nave Galileo foi lançada para o gigante gasoso em 1989. A música representa uma tentativa sonora de ode a essa missão, sendo por isso diferente de fase a fase. As bases permanecem no instrumental do math/sludge com influências de bandas como Neurosis, Meshuggah, Pelican, Alice in Chains e outras do género. Lançado em 2013, o trabalho recebeu bom feedback da crítica.

O albúm contém 7 faixas alusivas a diferentes etapas da missão. A viagem por um “espaço musical” começa pela ‘Venus’, uma música mais sludge. A ‘String of pearls’ é a segunda etapa da missão; esta faixa tem uma onda mais psicadélica e atmosférica. O ouvinte chega finalmente a ‘Jupiter’, a terceira faixa. Com esta já entramos num ritmo mais frenético e desafiante ao headbang… Um rock stoner potente, mas sempre com o math bem presente nas melodias. ‘Io’ é a quarta batida e a banda continua a levar-nos numa viagem pelo espaço remoto, através de melodias bem construídas. Com a ‘Europa’, a quinta faixa, encontramos uma variação de ambientes sonoros e um estilo quase progressivo. A ‘Ganymede’, uma das luas de Jupiter, destaca-se pelas diferentes componentes da música dos Entheogen estarem todas presentes. Por fim e para acabar esta experiência musical, vem a música ‘Callisto’. Mais uma vez somos levados num estilo que varia entre heavy e clean.

De forma geral o albúm ‘Moons of Jupiter’ é agradável de se ouvir e explora uma temática interessante que não é muito comum no metal. Se quiserem explorar umas melodias alusivas a planetas, cometas, luas e missões espaciais, este é o tipo de som ideal.
