Australian Blackened Metallers MEMORIA have today released their third full-length album entitled “Death Calls The Islands”, which the band describes as a “a guitar-driven album that is simultaneously beautiful and ugly”, via Daniel Vrangsinn’s Misantrof ANTIRecords. The album will be available both in physical format as a CD, and, in keeping with Misantrof’s philosophy, as a high quality MP3 download , which can be downloaded free from the Misantrof website...
...The partnership with Misantrof ANTIRecords, founded in 2007 by Daniel Vrangsinn (VRANGSINN, CARPATHIAN FOREST, SECHT etc.) was a logical one for MEMORIA. Given that the band is experienced in producing its own material, Misantrof’s approach of letting the bands have full creative control of their own work proved to be a great fit. “To be part of an evolving, independent artistic entity such asMisantrof fits perfectly with our values and was not a hard decision,” says Jonathan, “We create music because we love this art form and no one in MEMORIA wanted this tainted by the nastiness of financial or commercial considerations. Misantrof surpasses pathetic considerations about how to sell things that are genuinely different”. For his part, Vrangsinn is extremely pleased to be releasing “Death Calls The Islands”, and has high hopes that it will be received with as much acclaim as 2010’s breakaway Misantrof release, “Death Reclaims The Earth”, by Turkish Black Metallers EPISODE 13. Memoria is a blackened metal band from Perth, Western Australia. Formed in 2003, the band is a 6-piece, combining black metal, death metal and classical guitar traditions. Dark folk one day and black metal the next; the band has an experimental edge, often spending as much time recording drills on spring coils as recording conventional instruments. Influences are diverse, including bands such as Emperor; Ulver; Moonsorrow; Dödheimsgard; Enslaved; Opeth; Ministry; Swans; and Einstürzende Neubauten. The band also takes inspiration from experimental artists such as Bad Sector; Olhon; Alan Lamb; author Cormac McCarthy and the sound designs of David Lynch.
History
Memoria was founded by Jonathan Carroll in 2003 in Perth, Western Australia. Initially started as a solo project, Carroll recorded a ‘Memoria’ demo in mid-2003 combining elements of classical/Spanish guitar and dark folk melodies. Copies of the demo sold quickly to an enclave of Perth fans and Memoria performed as a solo act throughout 2004 in Western Australia, as well as several shows in London and Northern Italy.
Brendon Basley joined Memoria as a permanent member and drummer in 2006, co-producing the dark classical/folk album ‘The Midnight Ball’ (2007). This release was met with critical acclaim amongst European underground metal magazines.
Memoria shifted gears in 2008 with an experimental noise release entitled ‘Memorioquia: Auradeutung’. The album utilized sound design techniques; field recordings and melodies derived mostly from guitars and synthesizers.
The band expanded in 2009 with the additions of Andrew Trevenen (vocals); Mick Adams (guitars); and Jeremy Adams (bass). During this time, Memoria adopted a more ‘blackened metal’ style of playing, suitable for high energy live performances. Memoria continued with this line-up throughout 2009 and 2010, writing demos for the 3rd album and performing sporadic shows in Perth. After some successful live performances in 2010, Daniel Fox was also added to the Memoria line-up in 2011 as a second drummer.
