Just Before Dawn Interviewed! Premiere Song "Bastard Batalion"

Below can be read an interview conducted by Wilhelm Lindh with the charismatic leader of the band "Just Before Dawn" Anders Biazzi, you also can enjoy the world premiere for the new music "Bastard Batalion" taken from the upcoming new album "The Aftermath" with release date of 10/Nov/2014.

Wilhelm Lindh. Hey Anders, how are things?

Anders Biazzi. Hi man! Everything is great!

Wilhelm Lindh. You are a prolific musician these days, how come that you started Just before dawn? Was there something that you did not get to do in your other bands? Where did the band name come from?

Anders Biazzi. Don’t know why I started the band, just did I I was in a riff period at the time I think hahaha.
Ihe band name I took from the horror movie Just Before Dawn , but I think the name fits the bands war.

Wilhelm Lindh.. What would you say is the biggest difference between “Precis innan gryningen” and the new album “The Aftermath”?

Anders Biazzi. I think it’s more well written music wise and lyric wise , it's more like a story that’s being told from the beginning to the end

Wilhelm Lindh.. How did the idea of using different vocalists for almost each and every song come about?

Anders Biazzi. It was Roggas idea , he was going to do all the singing from the beginning , but when I did more and more tracks he came up with the idea of using more guys for the tracks. He wrote almost all the lyrics for the first album

Wilhelm Lindh. The new album sounds killer, could you give me a tour of the recording. Who did what, what gear did you use and so on?

Anders Biazzi. I record everything at home on my computer , the drums are recorded in Norway in Brynjars studio. The singers and solo guitarist was recorded in various studios. Like Marc Grewe and Mathias Lodmalm recorded their stuff at Mathias studio in Berlin. Dave Ingram did recorded his vox in his studio that he send out his morning radio show Metal Breakfast. Rick Rozz recorded his wammy in CGM studio with Tim Vazquez that recorded the new Massacre! Jonas Stålhammar did his vox at home , Teddy Möller and Jocke Mikiver did there vox at Möllers studio Blueflame production! Johan Jansson did recorde his vox at Peter Bjärgö studio , Gustav Myrin did his solos and vox at home , Jonas Lindblood did his solo and vox at home. Ronnie Björnström did his solos in his studio Garageland! Mattihas Borgh did recorde the opening drums on Bastogne in his studio Underground , Ralf Hauber did his vox in Marcus Maggesson studio, the reset of the guys I don’t really know where they recorded their stuff. I use Cubase for recording and a Focusrite soundcard that I plug into an POD 2.0! In to the Pod I have plugged in a Metal Muff for the guitars and a TS7 for the base! The Guitar I used for recording is a Gibson Explorer , and the bass is a Cheap ass Ibanez hahaha.

Wilhelm Lindh. I guess the previous question kind of will have the answer for this, but f it. How do you view the modern way of recording. Pro-tools vs the old analog way of doing things? Is it becoming too easy to ”cheat” in the studio or do you view it as just an evolution of recording?

Anders Biazzi
Anders Biazzi. I  think it's great that you can record at home on your computer , I don’t think its cheating. It really is an evolution , you can get a better sound at your home studio then what you did back in the days when you did hit a studio with your band . Just take a listen to the new JBD , the sound really kicks assss! 99% off the people that hear this think you have recorded in the real studio. (Damn fucking straight/Wilhelm)

Wilhelm Lindh. When I was reviewing your first album I could not put my finger on if the drums where real or programmed, so which is it?

Anders Biazzi. It is ezdrummer , a program for cubase with midi sounds from a real drummer! Also there is not many think its programmed drums.

Wilhelm Lindh. Your sound is similar to Amon Amarth, imo. Is this because you where influenced my their writing in the years you played with them or are they carrying on the Anders Biazzi sound?

Anders Biazzi. I did not do much writing in Amon Amarth only some riffs here and there , the writing I do is just me I’m not influenced by A.A i just play like this hahaha

Wilhelm Lindh. Have you guy(s) played live? If yes, where and when. How was it? If no, is this something you would like to do or do you view Just before dawn as just a studio band?

Anders Biazzi. This is just a studio project for me I play live with Blood Mortized

Wilhelm Lindh. Could you tell me about the other bands you are currently involved with?

Anders Biazzi. I also play and write music in Blood Mortized a Swedish old school death metal band from Stockholm with old members from Grave , Demonical , Remasculate , Pathalog.

Wilhelm Lindh. Having been in the game for such a long time, how do you view the internet’s effect on the music industry? Is it a blessing or a curse?

Anders Biazzi. I think little of both , in the beginning when the net was kind of new it was great , but now things spread to easy/fast , you can download your new album from a Russian site 1 week after the release hahaha! But the internet is also great for example JBD had never been if Facebook wasn’t invented! A blessed curse I would say hahaha

Wilhelm Lindh. In my reviews of your music I am constantly citing Bolt Thrower as a reference? What is your relationship with this band? Are you inspired by them? How do you view their stance on not releasing an album until they think the new material surpasses the old?

Anders Biazzi. Bolt Thrower is big influence for JBD , but only on some songs not all of them. Take Lighting War for example , it easily could have been Bolt Thrower written that track , that’s why Dave Ingram did get to sing on it! Then it’s some riffs here and there that are Bolt Throwerish hahaha some more influence are Hail of Bullets and  Hypocrisy. And about the surpasses the old I think its bull! Deliver now when you can , not in 10 years!

The faces
Wilhelm Lindh. What would be your dream for the future of Just before dawn? And what does the future actually hold in the foreseeable future?

Anders Biazzi. We have started to write some new music for the 3:e album , working title is "In the Depth of War" Around 6 trax are finish already some with vox and all! Some names the will appear is Kam Lee , Martin von Drunen , Rogga Johansson , Jonny Petterson , Håka Stuvemark , Samuel Englund , Thomas von Wachenfeldt! This time I’m getting some help with the riffing

Wilhelm Lindh. How has it been working with Chaos records and how did you get in contact with them

Anders Biazzi. We have had our up’s and downs with Chaos Records , it’s a small Mexican label so the money have been the problem. So the Aftermath have been delayed for some moths! But now we are back on track! and hope to release some more great stuff with them. A good friend of Blood Mortized got us in contact with them , first Blood Mortized got a contract with them , then I asked if they wanted to release JBD and they did.

Wilhelm Lindh. Since the lyrics were not included in the promo, could you tell me what they are about? I am guessing war, but maybe I am dead wrong! And while we are on the subject of lyrics, how important are lyrics in your opinion? Both as a musician and a listener.

Anders Biazzi. Yes its war all over again! The lyrics on this album is about different battles that was taking place in WWII but also not about a specify event just about war and what it brings! I think for this kind of music the lyrics is very important also for the listener 16. Is there something ells you would like to plug or discuss here is your chans!

Remember to have a look out for the new JBD album around the 10th of November!
It’s a kick ass steamrolling Death Metal album that will leave you wanting more!

Cheers!

Thanks you very much for your time. Cheerio Wilhelm

Thank you man!

Just Before Dawn "The Aftermath" Reviewed

Sweden's version of Bolt Thrower are back for another round of death metal savagery. This time with their second full-length album, called The Aftermath.  Not much has changed in the JBD camp, main man Anders Biazzi is still Platoon leader aka songwriter, guitar player and bass player. With vocals being handled by an tank load (boat load, but in a more metal way) people. This concept of using a different vocalist is really cool since you get a bit of a different taste for every song. The only difference is the addition of drummer Brynjar Helgetun. What we get is mid paced catchy death metal. Nothing overtly technical or spaced out. Just solid death metal that does exactly what it is supposed to do. Super heavy and head banger friendly.

So far JBD is following the Bolt Thrower way of doing things, keeping it simple and if it isn't broke, don't fix it. The music continues in the same vein as their previous album Precis innan gryningen. And since this is such a solid album why should I complain about that? And especially since Bolt Thrower seems to be dead set on not releasing a new album.  So I open my arms whole heartedly to this release. Of course there is nothing really new here and you have probably heard this before if you like this sort of music.  But in my mind good songwriting comes before technicality and innovation. And when the song writing is as solid as on this one I can only gobble it up and ask for seconds.

The second band that springs to mind while listening to The Aftermath is Amon Amarth. I guess this is not such a strange thing since that Mr Biazzi played in Amon Amarth many years ago. I am guessing that he shaped their sound in their early years since many melodies sound very familiar. And the same use of harmony sounds is found here as well.  Maybe I am bold to state this, but I think JBD is a way superior band than the before mentioned band. I know that this might get a few fan boys knickers in a twist, but instead of going nuts in comment sections. Do yourself the favor of checking out Just before the dawn and The Aftermath. You might just get a new favorite band.

The sound of this album is just top notch, I really like the mix. Every instrument is clearly audible, but the emphases is on the vocals and the guitars. Which is very good since the riffs and the vocals are the most interesting thing on this album. I am not saying that the drums a poorly played or anything. But they are not exactly doing anything super interesting. They are just giving the foundation to the riffs. Keeping a steady beat in the background.  And I guess for an album like this, this is exactly what the drums should be doing.  Then again they are way louder than on the last record.  And that is a good thing. The playing overall is great, of course there is nothing super technical or I guess technical at all. But I have always been of the opinion that the hardest trick to pull off in any art form is to make something simple yet interesting. And that Ladies and Gentlemen, Just before dawn has truly done here. A meat and potatoes death metal album that will make you come back for more.

So if you like mid paced death metal this album is a must have. Any fan of the bands I mentions as reference will absolutely love Just before dawn's new album The Aftermath. Over and out.

Debut Self-titled JUST BEFORE DAWN Reviewed - Track Premiere: The World Burning

So what has the Swedish death metal band Just Before Dawn to offer? Well the short bio that accompanied this Cd  dropped some serious names and promised music in the vein of Bolt Thrower and Asphyx. And closer than that can't a short bio be! For the music is heavy old school death metal, and when I say heavy I mean it is just crushing, damn this will make a lot of necks sore. And yes it sounds like Bolt thrower, the Asphyx reference I don't know since I haven't listened that much to them but I know that they play similar music to Bolt Thrower so I assume it is correct. So what about the members, well they are Rogga Johansson, Anders Biazzi,  Jonas Lindblood, Ralf Hauber, Mr.Hitchcock, Dennis Johansson,  Gustav Myrin and Tony Freed, these fellows are or have been playing in bands like Amon Amarth, Blood Mortized, Paganizer, Puteraeon, Zombification, Godhate amonge others. So why so many people, have they added a shit load of strange instruments or what is the story?? No the music is written and recorded by Anders Biazzi with the other dudes taking care of the vocals and doing the solos. I said before that the music sounds like Bolt Thrower, and I'm sticking by that statement since this is heavy no bullshit death metal the way Bolt Thrower blasts it out. But I do think that the Swedish death metal sound shines through quite a bit, the music is a bit more melodic and somber then the before mentioned band.

So I think these guys have a bit of their own sound, if you dig a bit deeper that is. I sometimes get a bit of a Amon Amarth vibe, and since the dude that writes the music used to be in Amon Amarth, this is very understandable. Take the song Ten Megaton War Machine  first of, it is a great track like all of the tracks, but what really caught my attention is the small tremolo runs in the chorus, it just screams Swedish death metal. I'm getting vibes from bands like Non Serviam and to an extent Mithotyn and just a hint of Necrophobic, and the vocals done by the mighty Mr Hitchcock from Zombification sound very Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth. I want to say they sound extremely Swedish in their delivery, even thou the dude doing them is very Mexican!

Let's keep discussing the vocals, the idea of using a different vocalist to almost every song (Jonas Lindblood does two songs) works, to be honest I did not really notice that there was a change in vocalist until track nr 5, (I listened first and read the bio second) since Mr. Hitchcock`s vocals differs from the other guys. So a cool idea and a nice way to change it up. And from a marketing perspective it is golden! Most of the vocalist have deep and low gurgling vocals, some of them are some real sewer rats.

As I mentioned before this album has a really killer sound, heavy full and deep, but this is when I talk about the guitars and bass. The drums sound kind of thin and are way in the background maybe they are using a drum machine, I can't make up my mind. If this is not the case, well spank my ass and call me Judy. Any case I think this album would have sounded better with the drums higher in the mix. In no way is this a bad sounding album, but it is just one of these things that bugged me, sometimes you can hardly hear the snare at all. But a minor detail when the songs are this good thou.

So the short and sweet of it all is that Just Before Dawn`s debut album Precis Innan Gryningen is a  killer album from a killer bunch of musicians! And for those of you who do not speak the gloriously beautiful Swedish language, the album title is an almost direct translation of the band name, pretty fucking nifty if you ask me!
And that is what I have to say, good day.

THE WORLD BURNING
Music:Biazzi
Lyrics:R.Johansson/Freed

Flames cover the world, sulphur clads the sky
winds of furious death, sweeps the dying earth

The warmachine has stopped, everything is dead and detroyed
the world no longer moves, it just burns

The world burning
like a flame waiting to die
The world burning
burns and fades away

Countries set ablaze, one by one laid to waste
the downfall consumes that no life will be spared
contaminated soil, useless forever more
slowly heaving in sickness, drowning in the blood of mother earth

The final shivering of life, bodies falls to the ground
Coal and ashes is all that is left of humanity

a mankind that thrived on it´s own death
has now burnt away
no more life, no more suffering
a cold and silent planet moves no more
