RABBITS: European Tour With Arabrot Nears New Split 7” & LP Repress Pending

Pollutant Portland pack RABBITS prepare to pitch pellets at the European people as a preemptive pounce previous to their petulant split platter with pals Arabrot placates the populous.

Norway's intangible, ever-changing, and ever-strange noiseniks ÅRABROT (whose album Solar Anus won the 2011 Spellemannprisen for Norway's best metal record) meets Portland's sludge-punk kings RABBITS (whose snarling 2012 album Bite Rites made many a year-end list). As if twins separated at birth with a psychic connection that spans a continent and ocean, both acts have mired themselves in the most base elements of rock and rebuilt these primitive pieces into music of violent, raw beauty. ÅRABROT's "Blood On Bunny" (no dig at their split partners, they swear) is part industrial, part noise-rock, part sludge and all disturbing, while RABBITS's "Yr In Luck" shifts between swinging, rolling, droning versus to grinding choruses, interspersed and ending with a pummeling dirge; like two fucked-up sides of the same shitty coin. The split will be pressed on mega-heavy 70-gram wax -- a split release with Rabbits' label Eolian Empire and Arabrot's Norwegian label Fysisk Format -- and the first of a series of split-release/split 7” releases between Rabbits/Eolian and their friends from other cities/labels.

In addition, RABBITS will drop their debut album Lower Forms in a deluxe vinyl repress through Eolian Empire, licensed from Relapse. The loved/loathed debut LP from the band was initially released by Relapse in February 2011 and quickly sold out on vinyl; the repress will see a thicker 180-gram delivery. The full goddamn Lower Forms LP is now streaming at the Eolian Empire Bandcamp.

Both records will be available in person on the RABBITS/ÅRABROT Euro tour, but if you live within the continent’s boundaries, preorders for both the repress of Lower Forms and the new split 7” are available through Eolian ahead of their release on May 28th.

Although the members of the triad toured Europe years ago -- then as part of Pleasure Forever and The VSS who toured there on a multitude of occasions -- this is RABBITS’ first international tour... and they plan on bringing the pain in full-force with this virgin contamination of the lands with their ÅRABROT co-instigators.

Portland’s Noise Vermin RABBITS Re-Launch Eolian Empire

The hindgut digesters in Portland-based noise/metal trio RABBITS recently revamped and re-launched local D.I.Y. label Eolian Empire, with new viscous pellets out now and more in the works. Initially started by RABBITS’ road dogand “fourth member,” Daniel Abell, Eolian Records was the burrow where the first few releases from RABBITS and others were birthed, at the time Abell also rooted in local act UNDER MOUNTAINS.

Following a litter of releases from Portland acts THE CYSTS, GONE TO CROATOAN, PURPLE RHINESTONE EAGLE, ACRE, CITY OF CHURCHES, ORDER OF THE GASH, SLAM DUNK as well as UNDER MOUNTAINS andRABBITS, the steam behind Eolian cooled for several years. That is until recently when the other members thumped new life into it. And now, the infestation is happening; several new Eolian releases are ready to bust out of the cageand maul your goddamn crops.

Following the killer response to last year’s Good To Die Records-released Bites Rites LP, subsequently followed by the postcard-style “Straight Edge”/”Wasted” Flexihead, RABBITS have taken things into their own paws and will use the Eolian Empire to infiltrate society further. The clan’s Relapse Records’ debut album Lower Forms will see a fatass 180-gram LP repressing, having been out-of-print on vinyl for some time now.

In addition, a split 7” release between RABBITS and avant noise masters ÅRABROT will also spill forth in conjunction with a joint Summer tour of the European continent. Further details on the cooperative release and live itinerary will be deposited once things have been digested further up the chain of organs.

A select discography from UNDER MOUNTAINS was just released March 1st, capturing the majority of material concocted in the three-year existence of the short-lived but much-loved act’s legacy. Having transplanted to Portland from Florida, the trio took over a house previously used for an indoor illegal cat-breeding operation and fashioned it into an artist compound; Project: Brodome. In the Brodome basement lab the members concocted their own fucked-up formula for lo-tech, progged-out, dirty doom. Slow drones, mad math, blasts of feral noise, and off-the-wall hooks come together to form “epic tar-pit battle anthems” (Crucial Blast) that are “pretty dang catchy” (Aquarius Records), and bring forth “visions of robots battling dwarf aliens in misty bogs” (Portland Mercury). Forty-eight mind-bending minutes of precision guitars, bowling-ball bass, and wild animal drums dragging you by the ears to who knows where... All the education you need. The collection is out now via digital download and a limited-run cassette.

Also to be set loose... Late April will see the release of Keep Our Heads, an Eolian compilation cassette of exclusive tracks from a massive arsenal of twenty-six Portland bands including GAYTHIEST, LORD DYING, NORSKA, PRIZE HOG, LKN and a whole pile of other gnarly riffers. This Summer will see releases from ethical scumbags DRUNK DAD, avant punks BIG BLACK CLOUD, hardcore savants HONDURAN, harsh noiser REDNECK, and prog-doomstersDIESTO.

Portland's caecothrophic collective RABBITS have excreted their very first hare-raising video to help ruin your day, constructed for the rampant skronking riffage of “Fight Right,” the second track off from their recently birthed Bites RitesLP. The cinematic mayhem was completed by Wes Johnson of Good to Die Productions -- the film team responsible for labelmates Deadkill’s "Oh God Help You" video -- utilizing early live footage shot by the fourth Rabbit Daniel Abell and RABBITS’ own warped “us-versus-them” concept.

For this year’s Record Store Day these racket practitioners dropped a two-song flexi postcard thing called Flexihead, busting out conflicting covers of Minor Threat’s “Straight Edge” and Black Flag’s “Wasted” in the relentlessly blaring noise-infested RABBITS rage. Portland Mercury’s music editor issued a short blog post, highlighting the hand-written love note from the band stating "Enjoy your desperate attempts to make this thing play."

RABBITS will gnaw their way across the Western US on a live shitfest in support of their newly-birthed sophomore LP Bites Rites beginning tomorrow. After another session copulating into existence its latest batch of scathing buzzsaw riffery, Portland’s ravenous vermin RABBITS has completed its new noise. Bites Rites will invade the human population in the final days of Summer 2012, a release guaranteed to scurry more shit into your life than the loved/loathed 2011-released Relapse Records debut Lower Forms.

RABBITS’ latest intoxicated orgy of adrenalized lagomorphic chaos will see release this September via a recent infestation of Good To Die Records. On Bites Rites this obligate nasal-breathing collective of rhythm morticians  -- drummer KG and guitarists/vocalists Sethro and Booze -- ravenously gnaw through nine tracks, including demented covers of Spacemen 3's “2:35” and Husker Du's “What's Going On.” Yes, a Butthole Surfers, Melvins, Unsane or Buzzov*en reference may scuttle forth during the sonic bombardment of Bites Rites, yet a thoroughbred uniqueness abounds within each segment. Bites Rites was recorded and mixed by Fester at Haywire Studios, Portland, (Wizard Rifle, Atriarch, Nux Vomica) and mastered by Ryan Foster at Foster Mastering, Portland (Agalloch, Muslimgauze, Fishbone), with cover art by Sacramento artist Skinner (author of Every Man Is My Enemy) and drawings and titles by Portland artist Kevin Abell (co-editor of Nudity in Groups). Bites Rites will be released on 180-gram LP with included digital download delivery via Good To Die Records on September 18th.

What to do about this RABBITS problem?

We last heard from Portland's “noizefuck crew” [1000 Times Yes] with their first full-length LP, Lower Forms, “a thing of cracked-out, violent beauty” [Portland Mercury], “totally absurd... in the best possible way” [A.V. Club], and “everything I could possibly hate about a record rolled into one and then served on a piece of shit” [Angry Metal Guy]. To be fair to all, All Music Guide said “in time, one could see this making a lot more sense.”

RABBITS, however, prefers to make more non-sense. How else to explain the necessity of using multi-hyphenated permutations of punk, sludge, hardcore, thrash, noise, rock, and metal to describe RABBITS? Can this trio's casual disregard for all that is genre-proper be explained by anything more than ignorance, negligence, or downright maliciousness? Perhaps...

BITES RITES, the new record on Good To Die Records opens a deep portal into the mind of the superorganism that is RABBITS. And something in that mind is not right. Like many that came before them, with overnight success and worldwide fame came parties, booze, drugs, strippers, and the predictable descent into bitterness, jealousy, paranoia, and eventual madness. The toll taken is obvious in both the sound and substance of the new record. In a haze of booze and drugs RABBITS descended down into a Felony Flats basement with someone named Fester to ratchet up the sonic insanity and emerged with a platter of grisly fried guitars, machines-gone-awry drums (still no bass—how is it so HEAVY?!), and the vocals of a deranged lunatic backed by a Family-spawned youth crew. Long gone are the philosophical and scientific musings on man's place in the universe found on Lower Forms; it's now man against man, us against them, me against you.

And yet, the songs on BITES RITES are catchy! Listen and you may find yourself singing “LAME!” next time you run into your arch nemesis at a party, as you realize, “It is how much you suck it or how much you blow.” See if you can fight the unrelenting riff and roll of “Fight Right.” Don't be surprised when “Meth Valley 99”—a re-imagined Sonic Youth / Lydia Lunch classic with the lovely and dangerous Jonnie Monroe of Fist Fite as the female foil—makes you want to hit that pipe again.

Plus... RABBITS wears its not-metal hearts on its sleeves with demented covers of Spacemen 3's “2:35” and Husker Du's “What's Going On.” Maybe BITES RITES doesn't make exactly clear what's going on inside its head, but you may just want to follow RABBITS to the zoo anyway. [JH]
