”A Study in Coordinated Whiplash” wrote The New York Times October 2008, after one of SHINING’s pounding concerts in Manhattan. Since their debut on a small Norwegian acoustic jazz label in 2001, SHINING has moved on to become one of the most hard-hitting, genre-pushing bands of our generation. Their determination to create new sounds and cross boundaries has only been further stepped up with their latest ear-crushing achievement, to be set free in 2010; a synchronized launch of attacks of a sci-fi drone military army; and an unstoppable force that could jolt the very Earth out of its orbit - that’s what SHINING is all about. After their previous four critically acclaimed albums, it's become obvious to all that SHINING has created their own unique musical universe on Blackjazz. Joining forces with the technical prowess and extensive musical experience from renowned producer/engineer Sean Beavan (NIN, Marilyn Manson, Slayer), Blackjazz elevates and intensifies the vision of the band. Also featuring vocals by Grutle Kjellson (Enslaved), on a cover of King Crimson’s classic “21st Century Schizoid Man”, Blackjazz creates an undeniable aggressiveness and catchiness rarely found in metal. ”In Frank Zappa’s old house, with Marilyn Manson’s old bodyguard dog lying on the floor in the kitchen, the mastermind mixer and producer Sean Beavan is working his dark magic on about an hour of new SHINING music." - Jørgen Munkeby (SHINING singer, and Blackjazz producer) |
A jazz lover who needs the intensity of extreme metal? Forget all schemes and concepts, transgress and transcend, scream and shout and praise Shining for representing you. Jazz, certainly - only that it's black. Blackness absorbs everything into the groove and melody where it originated, without the often pointless agonism of what has been categorized as 'free' and 'avant-garde'. Free jazz this is, in its accessibility and the impetus to both dance and headbang. Thanks Shining for finally introducing jazz to metal - it's a love at first sight, consummated within each listener who already has them both deep inside. Such solid, undeniable, ecstatic fun - deathtrance and no less!
I vote for record of the year, age or however you wish to measure time - I can't contemplate measurement, since Shining have made my day like nobody has in a long time.:)
