NIKLAS KVARFORTH Features In New SUCHTHAUS Video And Album

When sculptor Spacebrain released “The Dark Side and the Bright Side”, the debut album from his SUCHTHAUS project, in 2011, it was immediately apparent that not only was the music he produced eclectic, but so too were his collaborators,  ranging from Maniac  (SKITLIV, ex-Mayhem) to  CURRENT 93’s David Tibet, Fredrik A. Juell  (BURNING RUBBER,  BERSERK BASTARDS) and singer Sibob Jawara.  Now, with the band’s sophomore album “Motorbrain” taking shape, it seems that the tradition is set to continue, when SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth dropped by Spacebrain’s Oslo home recently to check in with his old friends, and ended up contributing vocals on one of the new tracks, which also showcases a performance by SUCHTHAUS drummer Hellhammer (MAYHEM).   Since Spacebrain likes to “visualise” the band’s music as well, a video for the track, which is titled “Walls of Berlin”, was filmed on the spur of the moment, and can be seen below.

To try and classify SUCHTHAUS’ music is virtually impossible, since the musicians concerned work in a completely unstructured way, drawing on their mood at the time to take the ideas for each track forward, rather than writing set pieces.  And, as previously mentioned, each track is enhanced by video, a practice which is unsurprising coming from a musician who started his career as a visual artist. Commenting on the new album, Spacebrain had this to say:  “Motorbrain” will be totally different from our debut, “The Dark Side and the Bright Side”, as this time we will be making a pure metal album, but one that focuses on different nuances within the genre. Let’s just say that when we had a band meeting recently we concluded that we’d better hurry up and finish this album because the darker material was not good for our mental health!”   Along with Spacebrain on vocals and bass, and Hellhammer on drums, SUCHTHAUS lineup includes co-founder Fruen on vocals and guitars, Ingvar on guitars and AD/HD on bass.

Explaining how his unexpected contribution to “Motorbrain” came about Niklas Kvarforth said: “Last weekend, Hoest (TAAKE) and I were on our way to a studio outside Oslo to do some recording for a project we’re both involved in. We did however have a few hours to kill in the capital before catching our train and ended up meeting some old friends of ours - an evening which unexpectedly resulted in additional recordings in the living room of former SKITLIV bassist Spacebrain for his upcoming SUCHTHAUS album. Spacey filmed some of it, which kinda bothered me at first, but for him… I owe him way more than that. Looking forward to hearing the result.”

SHINING is a band that needs no introduction, particularly to fans of Black Metal and DSBM, for whom NIKLAS KVARFORTH’s unruly child has been a yardstick for superb musicianship, skilled writing, and a complete disregard for the artificial rules placed on the genres by a generation of fans who only became aware of Black Metal long after the band was formed back in 1996.  Never a band to stick to a repetitive formula when playing live, SHINING’s performances are emotionally charged and “of the moment”, with audiences always wondering what to expect next from one of the scene’s most dynamic frontmen.   SHINING has a new full-length  album, “8 ½ - Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd”, due out on Dark Essence Records on the 23rdSeptember, which features guest vocals from some of the elite of Black Metal including ATTILA CSIHAR (MAYHEM, TORMENTOR),  MANIAC (SKITLIV, EX MAYHEM), GAAHL (GOD SEED, WARDRUNA, TRELLDOM, EX GORGOROTH), FAMINE (PESTE NOIRE) and PEHR LARSSON (ALFAHANNE), a track from which can be heard here. More information about SHINING can be found here.

CREST of DARKNESS is another band with a long history behind it - 18 years to be precise.  With six full-length albums under their belts, CREST OF DARKNESS this year saw Kickass Metal webzine place two of those albums in first and second positions in their “Norwegian Heavy Metal Albums of All Time” feature.  Combining elements from both Black and Death Metal together with founder Ingar Amlien’s interest in Vampirism and Satanic ideology and his passion for sonic brutality, CREST OF DARKNESS’ sound has grown in power and intensity over the years and the recent addition of a young new guitarist has breathed a renewed sense of enthusiasm and a fresh outlook to the band. CREST OF DARKNESS’ sixth-full length album, “In the Presence of Death”, was released on My Kingdom Music earlier this year.  More information about CREST OF DARKNESS can be found here.

CREST OF DARKNESS

Formed in 2007 in Stockholm, STERBHAUS is a four-piece thrash/death combo that set out to prove that quality Metal combined with a neatly weighed dose of humour can blend perfectly. Having completely revitalized itself STERBHAUS now brings to the stage humour with sarcastic tongue-in-cheek wit and verbal slaughter that is hell-bent on earning the band a smirk or two. STERBHAUS is all about waging sonic warfare against trends and stereotyping. What you see is what you get, and what you get is music founded on the four cornerstones of Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Black Metal. “Angels For Breakfast…And God For Lunch”, the debut album from STERBHAUS, was released on Killhead Productions in 2012.  More information about STERBHAUS can be found here.

NIKLAS KVARFORTH’S BOOK HEADS TO PRINTERS FOR SECOND EDITION

Much to the surprise of SHINING’s founder NIKLAS KVARFORTH, “When Prozac No Longer Helps”, the book of his lyrics that he translated into English from his native Swedish, and which was published in December of last year, sold out in a very short time, and a second edition is now at the printers, ready for its 23 September release.  The second edition differs slightly from the original in that it contains a handful of minor corrections, and two additional lyrics, one being those for the song “Through Corridors of Oppression” which was previously omitted, and lyrics which Kvarforth wrote for Norwegian Black Metallers URGEHAL six months before the untimely death of their frontman Trondr Nefas.  As with the first edition, the second will feature the English and Swedish lyrics side-by-side and will also be limited to 500 copies signed by Kvarforth.  It will once again only be available directly from the band’s webshop in order to make sure that the true fans who want a copy get a chance to buy one without having to pay inflated prices elsewhere. The second edition is available to pre order now at http://www.shininglegions.com/

“When Prozac No Longer Helps” garnered praise from fans and critics alike, who were at long last able to understand the true emotions and the darkness behind the lyrics that accompany SHINING’s music.  WATAIN’s Erik Danielsson perfectly summed up the depth of Kvarforth’s body of work saying: “The dark and narrow back alleys of the human mind are best explored and translated into art by those who abide in them. Artists who are not trying to hide their wounds or helplessness, neither their lustful yearning for Death and misery. . . This is why Niklas’ writing stands out as genuine; it comes from a sea of darkness in which he learned to swim a long, long time ago”.

Commenting on the decision to print a second edition Kvarforth said: “When we decided to publish the original version, we were not entirely sure that there would be much interest in a book of lyrics, and we were astonished at the speed with which it sold out, every copy having been snapped up within six weeks.  We were even more surprised when we were approached by several people who wanted to translate and publish the lyrics in their own languages, which is something that is in the works.  It just goes to show that there is life in the music business outside of just listening to sounds”.

SHINING is set to release a new full-length album, “8 ½ - Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd” on Norway’s DARK ESSENCE RECORDS, coincidentally also on the 23rd September.  The album will be somewhat special in that it will consist of six songs from the “Livets Ändhållplats” and “Angst” era in their original pre-production versions but with the addition of newly recorded bass and guitars, as well as Lars Fredrik Fröslie’s keyboards (ANGST SKVADRON, WOBBLER, ASMEGIN) which the band didn’t start using until their sixth album.  The songs will be sung by six different vocalists, including Kvarforth himself.   “8 ½ - Feberdrömmar I Vaket Tillstånd” will appear in CD format and limited edition black or white 12” vinyls, and is available to pre-order from “http://www.shininglegions.com/

NIKLAS KVARFORTH’S SHINING TO BE THE SUBJECT OF DOCUMENTARY

As was previously hinted at, Niklas Kvarforth’s SHINING is to be the subject of a documentary which is being produced for release in cinemas. The documentary, which is the idea of Martin Strandberg of Sweden’s Black Shadows Film Productions, will chart the often turbulent history of the band, and includes candid interviews with the people who have been most closely involved with SHINING in one way or another over the years, including family, friends and former band members. A video teaser for the documentary was released recently, and English subtitles have now been added.

Commenting on the project Kvarforth said: ”We keep being asked about the documentary, but we are as much in the dark about it as everyone else. It’s Martin’s project, and we have no input into it at all other than as interviewees. We shall see what we shall see.

NIKLAS KVARFORTH TO WRITE “CHRONICLES FROM THE ASYLUM”COLUMN

In a statement issued today, SHINING’s NIKLAS KVARFORTH made the somewhat unexpected announcement that he would be writing a twelve-part column entitled “Chronicles from the Asylum”, the French version of which would be published exclusively in METALLIAN MAGAZINE. Further information can be found here.

Regarding the subject matter of the column, KVARFORTH had this to say: “The way things have been heading the past few years with the general decline of the physical format, including that of the printed press, I feel there is a need to reveal certain things that reporters, for whatever reason, dare not speak of, whether because of censorship concerns or the danger of becoming social pariahs. I, on the other hand, have no problems with that, so, with Chronicles from the Asylum” I intend to destroy a few of the misconceptions about how the music industry really works and hopefully shatter a few dreams and relationships along the way. As the first part is mainly concentrating on the pros and cons of the contemporary decline, we will do all that is in our power to have these articles in printed form only, and not on any meaningless website”.

ARTWORK AND DETAILS OF UPCOMING COVERS EP FROM NIKLAS KVARFORTH’S SHINING REVEALED

Sweden’s SHINING is set to release an EP of cover songs with a choice of material that will come as a surprise to many of the band’s fans.  The four-track EP, titled “Lots of Girls Gonna Get Hurt”, includes tracks from KATATONIA, KENT, IMPERIET and POETS OF THE FALL, and is due for release on Spinefarm Records on the 16th of May.  Whilst KATATONIA is an internationally recognised name, KENT and Thåström’s IMPERIET are relatively unknown outside of Sweden, where they are two of the country’s biggest names, and POETS OF THE FALL is a Finnish band with a substantial following in their own country.  Cover art is by Pauline Greefhorst.
Commenting on the decision to release an EP of covers, as well as on the choice of material, SHINING’s front man and founder Niklas Kvarforth had this to say: “In no way should this EP be seen as a new direction for SHINING, and it is absolutely no indication of what you can expect from our upcoming eighth album. Like most musicians neither myself, nor the rest of the band, restrict ourselves to listening to only one genre of music.  We all have eclectic tastes, and finding ourselves with some spare time in the studio, we recorded a total of six covers, and decided to release four of them. This EP simply represents some of the artists and music that we like.  We know that those fans of SHINING who limit themselves to a narrow musical spectrum will hate the album, but that really is of no concern to us”.
SHINING’s eighth, as yet untitled, full-length album will be released in autumn of this year.  More information about SHINING can be found on the band’s Facebook page.

SO MUCH FOR NOTHING DEBUTS TRACK FROM FORTHCOMING ALBUM WITH GUEST VOX FROM SHINING’S KVARFORTH

SO MUCH FOR NOTHING, the band formed in 2007 by SARKOM front man Erik Unsgaard, has previewed a second track from the forthcoming album “Livsgnist”, which is set for release on the 16th January on MY KINGDOM MUSIC in both CD and LP version.  The track, titled “Suffer in Silence”, sees several guest artists joining the band’s two-man line up, with SHINING’s Niklas Kvarforth providing additional lyrics and vocals, PANTHEON I’s Live Julianne Kostøl on the cello, TROLLFEST’s Martin Storm-Olsen on acoustic guitar, and Ingvild Sareeta Kaare, formerly of RAM-ZET on violin. “Suffer in Silence” can be heard on the band’s MySpace page  or on the SoundCloud player below.
Aside from Unsgaard himself on guitars and vocals, the nucleus of the band includes URGEHAL drummer Uruz who joined the band in 2009 when, having written eight songs, Unsgaard realised that he was ready to take the first steps to expand the band from what was initially a solo project.  Drawing inspiration from the general decadence that has seeped into society over the years, SO MUCH FOR NOTHING’S sound is a mix of brooding black metal and dark melodies, which together perfectly creates the decadent atmosphere that Unsgaard seeks to express through his music.
With his experience as a musician on the Norwegian Black and Extreme Metal scenes, Unsgaard has been able to draw on an abundance of guests from the Scandinavian metal scene to appear on “Livsgnist”.  Apart from the ones previously mentioned, other guests include SHINING guitarist Peter Huss, TROLLFEST’s Dag Stiberg and Eirik Renton, URGEHAL’s Trondr Nefas, PANTHEON I’s "Aethyris” McKay (ex-ABSU) and Seidemann (1349) and pianist Kyrre Olavsrud.
“Livsgnist” is SO MUCH FOR NOTHING’s first full length album, having previously released “Sublife Warranty”, a 7” split with ANGST SQVADRON, on Folter Records. A listening session for “Livsgnist” is scheduled for the 14th September at Unholy in Oslo.  Full track listing for the album as follows:
1) Suicide-Syndrome
2) One Last Night
3) Perfect
4) Suffer in Silence
5) My Precious
6) Livsgnist
7) New Life - New Beginning

“Suffer in Silence”, together with “Perfect”, from “Livsgnist” can be heard on the band’s SoundCloud player which can be found here or below.

SHINING’S NIKLAS KVARFORTH JOINS LIST OF BLACK METAL MUSICIANS TO APPEAR AT UPCOMING BENEFIT CONCERT FOR SLAVIA FRONTMAN

SHINING’s NIKLAS KVARFORTH has joined the list of musicians and bands who will appear at a special Benefit Concert for SLAVIA founder and front man JONAS R. CHRISTIANSEN (ex-DISIPLIN)  who is suffering from cancer.   The concert, “ALGIR: Støttekonsert for Jonas R. Christiansen”,which will be held at the Garage in Bergen, Norway, on Friday 18thNovember, has been organised by friends of the musician, who hope to add to the funds already raised to send Christiansen for treatment in Denmark.
The line up on the evening features sets from HELHEIM and GRAVDAL, as well as SLAVIA themselves, in a performance that will mark CHRISTIANSEN’s final appearance with the band that has been so central to his life over the years and which, in all likelihood, will not go on without him.  A “Supergroup” line up comprising NOCTURNO CULTO of DARKTHRONE, HOEST of TAAKE, and SATYR and FROST of SATYRICON will get together for the event to play a special DARKTHRONE/SATYRICON set.
KVARFORTH will appear on stage with GRAVDAL to perform the track “Mishandlet” from the band’s latest album “Torturmantra”.  As well as guesting on the track for the album, the SHINING front man recently announced that the song was one of the tracks he had chosen for inclusion on his upcoming double CD solo retrospective “Fifteen Years of Absolute Darkness” which is due for release on Spinefarm Records in December, and charts fifteen years of his often controversial musical career.
Commenting on KVARFORTH’s appearance at the Benefit Concert, GRAVDAL founder PHOBOS (AETERNUS, GALAR, MALSAIN) said:  “Like all the other artists and people involved in the Benefit Concert we wanted to make this something special for Jonas, so we asked NIKLAS if he would consider guesting with us.  He agreed without any hesitation whatsoever to take time out of a very busy schedule to come along from Sweden and contribute to everyone’s efforts to help not only one of our fellow musicians, but also a friend to so many on the Bergen scene”.
Below you can hear the original album version of the GRAVDAL track “Mishandlet” from the album “Tortrumantra” featuring NIKLAS KVARFORTH on guest vocals.  The track can either be found  here or below.

Hollow Devotion

Maniac
In the 1569 eyes that I see through
The real intention comes alive
So hopelessly lost in hopes all of you
I wish you all could see what I see

This world is empty as empathy

With eyes like poisoned snakes
I burn at the core of redemption
Like sick animals Ill put you to sleep
And see that this world is nothing

Incineration as healing
A wound of ecstasy
The hand that caresses
By death I give life

To enjoy everything
enjoy nothing
To know everything
know nothing
To own everything
own nothing
To be everything
be nothing

I Am the Breath of God

  SKITLIV by PATRICIA THOMAS

Towards the Shores of Loss (Vulture Face Kain)

Maniac

The arrow
Told me
I am under stars
As sweet as being
But the stars' faces
The implant is
The Merciful Dust
The slick face of the unborn
Exhausted head
In the peace of the trip
The spurs stutter "chaos"
Or "love"
But only the lonely
The axe
At which click you
At fucked faun play
Makes faces
Of stairs and stars
But the train is dead
Your faith
"I wonder who makes the sea?"
"I wonder Ur?"
The neck smells nude
And the pain and love
After the woman blossoms
At streams
I see moths fail in polite twilights
The broken banks
The horses fall
The beautiful pool
Buy grace in installments
Give fox fox fox
Frost broken face
Vulture face Kain

Craving the unlimited nothingness
The seeps through the eyeballs of life
Sanctified by the hand of the Lord
The one that kept his secrets and
Balanced the unforgiven challenge
That I hoped to wear on my shoulders
Nothing else came through these walls
Except the screams that shattered
Your dreams

Sagacity of wanton strangeness
Coming up on the ever yielding lifelessness
In through the holiness of His miseries
Slaying the by-products of the eternal screams
To whatever cleverness you tried to balance

Retributions and dull confirmations
Kept clean for your own contributions
Slowly I saw your face of Hell and touched every way of it

Pollutions never came that easy
When Satan stared back in anguish
Dissolutions where always pure as ice
How can you now cast the dice?
Like sharpened knives of dried up shells
The informations from you was dreadlife
In its own depravity it called out
To shared visions of the sky divisions
How could I ever go this way?
How could I ever love your eyes?
Mishandled nothings of dying cavortions
Hell or Heaven was never an option

Probability is non-negotiable
Inside those cracked up bells
And came crashing in flashes
That once was you and me
They piled up Jesus-like bombshells
The mystery of the one soul given
Of all I craved
Of all I behaved
Hell or Heaven was never an option

For us
