Dream Theater é uma banda de metal progressivo originária dos Estados Unidos e formada em meados dos anos 80. Tornaram-se numa das bandas do movimento progressivo mais bem sucedidas desde o auge do rock progressivo em meados dos anos 70.

A banda é conhecida pela qualidade técnica de cada um de seus integrantes, tendo ganho vários prémios por revistas especializadas. São muito respeitados por grandes nomes do rock metal, tendo colaborado com vários outros músicos de renome. Num exemplo famoso,John Petrucci foi nomeado como o terceiro guitarrista do G3, juntamente com Steve Vai e Joe Satriani, seguindo a trilha de guitarristas como Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp e Yngwie Malmsteen.

Dream Theater também é conhecido por sua versatilidade em estilos musicais, o que tornou possível à banda entrar em turnê com diversas bandas, que incluem Frank Zappa, Deep Purple,Emerson Lake & Palmer, Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, Marillion, Megadeth, In Flames, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Queensrÿche, Fear Factory, Enchant, Symphony X, Pink Floyd,Yes e Rush.
