Chugger's 'Human Plague'

The Wrath of Miasmic

The Gardnerz posts video of drum recording

Hails my fellow metalheads. Here we are again and with some good news from our doomy friends The Gardnerz. After releasing the album 'The System of Nature' (2011), the mini album 'It All Fades' (2012) and the single 'Exiting Reality' (2013), the International doom/death metal monster is back with blends of boisterous and fatalistic metal. It seems that their up coming album - 'We Have Lost - A Fatalist Manifesto' - is taking shape.

If you want a little taste of what's to come just check (below) the drum recording video for the new album that the Swedish band posted on youtube, recorded at studio Armageddon Osijek Croatia.

The new work sounds exciting. As expected, from what you can listen, the album displays a varied soundscape with some groovy rhythms. Wilhelm brings his Flamenco/Classical roots to the album and blends it with death riffs and slow tempos. As always The Gardnerz show how groundbreaking is their extreme music.

'We Have Lost - A Fatalist Manifesto' is slated for an early to mid 2015 release through Mechanix records from Sweden. The album will contain eight songs, plus an intro/ outro and as always a cover song.

The Gardnerz - 'We Have Lost -A Fatalist Manifesto' Line up:

Johan Bergström - Vocals
Wilhelm Lindh - Guitar
Francisco Martín - Bass
Vedran Benčić - Drums

Caelestia's 'Beneath the Abyss'

A faixa título é outra obrigatória a ouvir.

Rock on \m/

Apocryfal's 'Aberration of Mind'

Do you want to absorb loads of death metal? Well, if that's what you want, here goes... Have you heard about Apocryfal? If not, it's better for you to clean those ears and increase the volume to the maximum. This Finnish force isn't joking around and when it comes to "heavy and loud", they are a talisman that anyone would like to possess.

'Aberration of Mind' is the band's second record, but it was already released in the 2nd October, 2013. The EP is the following of the debut demo, called 'Ravens'. This 5 track work is for bearded man. It's one of those brute sounds with a impeccable production, but maintaining a raw touch at the same time, therefore giving it an old school feel with a pinch of modernity.

In my eyes, despite the EP being constructed with death metal pillares, it's also very melodic and with some black metal influences that can be heard throughout the work. Listen to the tune 'Intro' - this track displays a melodic ambient proprer of black metal, but the vocalist growls are in a death metal wave.

To conclude: the album is awesome... riffs that couldn't get any better, variation of rhythms, well structured songs, fast tempos and heavyness; meaning, nothing bad to say about it. I end this review appealing to all the metalheads out there to listen to this great band of death metal. If the band's future keeps like this, it will be good for sure. Rock on \m/.

Imperial Triumphant's 'Abyssal Gods'

New York is one hell of a city… I can hear the underground clubs cracking with blackened death metal, I can visualize the earthquakes breaking the city streets, I can hear the thunderous storms forming in the black skies above the buildings, I can feel the fragility and frailty of human existence and the ephemerality of life. Such are the images and feelings that Imperial Triumphant gives me with ‘Abyssal Gods’ album.

The band was formed in 2005 with the purpose of transcending the mainstream bases of metal and to create a vanguardist black sound, categorized by futuristic elements of modern black metal. Composing inharmonious melodies, devastating ambients and technically superior soundscapes since 2005, the group is formed by Ilya (vocals and guitars), Malave (bass), Cohen (drums) and Grohowski (also playing drums). Their influences range from Deathspell Omega to Polish Post-Serialism composer Krzysztof Penderecki, thus the peculiar, unconventional and bizarre musicality.

‘Abyssal Gods’ is a monster of a work. There are few bands capable of expressing such complex ingenuity and “spirit”, preserving at the same time a unique identity. This is what Imperial Triumphant does with a dark splendor – the transformation of deconstructed, well established roots in brilliant, terrorizing and modern opus.

It’s easy to capture the American style in their playing. The quartet displays an almost blues/jazz orientated sonority. In addition, to top it off, there’s a grand variation in the band’s blends, ranging from black, death, atmospheric to a post-serialism influenced genre. This is why I was immediately attracted by the grotesque essence of Imperial Triumphant. Not to mention the great quality of the album’s production. The complexity of the band’s creations could easily turn the production in a bloomer, but that’s obviously not the case. The constant change of rhythm, the inconsistent features of the songs (in a strangely pleasant way) and the difficult compositions don’t spoil the work at all.

The 10 track album, containing a total of 40:31 minutes, is a masterpiece of black metal. One can’t simply name one song of the work and talk about it. The monstrous piece must be “attacked” as a whole; the listener needs to spend his time searching for the gems that can be found all over the music. It offers a journey to experience over and over again.

I highly recommend ‘Abyssal Gods’. Not only will you be able to headbang to intense music, you will also be able to calmly savour every single note transpired by these weird beings of black metal. The album will be released on February 2015 through code 666. Check it and rock on \m/.

Brutal art with Insanity Reigns Supreme

Hi guys, here I am again and this time with awesome black death metal for you. The band I’m going to talk about is the experienced Belgian Insanity Reigns Supreme. I was really anxious to get my hands on their upcoming fourth studio album entitled “Unorthodox”, that will be released on January 16th through Shiver Records, and finally the streaming arrived. It goes without saying that my expectations were concretized. Once again the band demonstrates their imperative nature. With already 25 years of existence their furious infused metal (combining black/death and doom) continues strong.

The follow-up to 2009’s renowned opus “Occultus Insanus Damnatus” presents as central theme the duality of human nature and its macabre consequences. The 11 track full-length is very entertaining to the extent that its diversity will give you the right mood to listen to it over again. The work will never fall into oblivion, meaning it will never get boring. Song after song the album grows and gets more interesting, almost like a good plot reaching its climax. There are many jewels in “Unorthodox”, from brutal death screams, crazy and distorted riffs, slow and heavy doom rhythms to diabolic whispering, clean guitar playing and dark atmospheres.

Sadly there are some negative points about the album. Despite the fact that it gets more interesting in the course of time some tracks are a little vague. Take the songs ‘Moonlight Sacrifice’ (a short classical cover of Moonlight Sonata with a special touch) and ‘The Calling’ (00:39 seconds of chants) as examples. While others may disagree, In my point of view one should always regard the album as a whole but even so those songs don’t contribute much to its greatness.

However and using the band' words: The duality can be found in many ways on the CD itself. These intros (talking about the songs refered above) are part thereof. Since the songs themselves are brutal, these intros are deliberately more fragile and form a counterpoint to the other songs. Also the intros themselves have duality in them. Moonlight sacrifice was played live by an innocent 12 year old who has yet to experience the horrors of this world. Then this innocence gets violated by adding the sounds of some depraved individuals in full action. The same is true for The Calling. The voice is almost angelic, but her message is VADE RETRO SPIRITUS SANCTUS, which roughly translates into fuck off holy ghost!

As you can see and as I said, the album as a whole shows a great passion from the band that thought well in every aspect of the concept presented. For that i give them my cheers.

The album’s artwork is really cool. It was designed by “Septic Flesh” frontman Seth Siro Anton. The slipcase version of the album further visualizes man’s cruel reality with its two different covers, hidden details and penetrating hints. Seth Siro Anton commented: “It's always a dark pleasure to work with Insanity Reigns Supreme. Whilst working on this project, it is without a doubt one of most bizzare artworks I have ever created, while I was trying to explore the great beauty of Grotesque in Dark Art”.

Insanity Reigns Supreme had the following to say: “Work in the studio has never been this intense and needed full input and drive from every band member to pull it off. Andy drove us to our limits and the end product clearly shows this intensity”.

Those words describe perfectly the great effort of the band. The album is in fact intense and diverse. Andy has done a great job in the studio but the cheering goes to all te members of the band. That said and at large the band managed to create a invigorating piece. They show that even after 25 years they continue to do it the right way. I hope that more years will come to hear these guys’ brutal art.

Apontokation with blood, sweat and tears

Apontokation is a death/thrash group coming from Guadix, Spain. The group arose in the beginnings of 2010 by the hand of Sijmen (Drums) and Patxi (Guitars), ex-members of bands from the same region. Little by little they composed some themes and tried to gather new players for the band. Before long Tito (guitars), Paco (Bass) and Antonio Vera (Vocals) were welcomed. After many shows they recorded their first demo ‘Awakening the Beast’ through Matxete Prod. Soon to follow the band played more concerts in Granada, Almeria and other citys. A few months later Tito leaves the band and returns to his home city where, due to an unfortunate accident, he passed away in 2013. Despite the emptiness feeling in all members of the band they move on and record their second demo entitled ‘Bloody Carnival’. Thereafter Paco also decides to leave Apontokation for personal reasons and Gustavo enters in his place. After a few months of rehearsing the band was prepared to participate in Exorcismo Vaginal Fest with bands such as Avulsed, Manica, Death Illusion and Ever Silence. Antonio Vera also left the group and in his places comes Manu Garzon, an old acquaintance of the regional metal scene. With Patxi, Sijmen, Gustavo and Manu Garzon the new formation recorded ‘Human Chaos’ single. The single is a taste of what the forthcoming work of the band will be.

I listened to the various works the band released, and from what I could hear they’ve been evolving well. Their initial sound (‘Awakening the Beast’ demo) was litlle produced, very raw but strong still. They presented that old school rooted death/thrash metal with some very nice musical phrases. The quartet second demo ‘Bloody Carnival’ demonstrated a solid growth of the band’s sound. The production of the demo also changed displaying a better quality in terms of fluency. Nevertheless there are some passages that could be a litlle different. Take the intro of the song ‘M.O.S.H’ for an exemple – before the blast beat drumming you can hear an awesome guitar “screaming” that could be mixed higher. And that happens again almost in the end of the song. When the fast riffing enters after the solo you can hear a pick slide technique that could be also mixed higher. In the album-titled song you can hear some fails in the music especially in the solo. The hammer-ons and pull-offs aren’t perfect but it doesn’t make big difference since it makes the work more “real” with a “live-act” feeling.

What made me excited about Apontokation was the single ‘Human Chaos’. This single was a huge leap for the band. I can actually say that hearing this single was a totally new experience. It was almost like hearing a different band. The fact is that the music bears a much more professional touch in all aspects, be it the composition, be it the production. The contrast between the “child” Apontokation and the “matured” Apontokation is so high that i got the impression of “blood, sweat and tears” in their work. What got me to think was that in ‘Human Chaos’ the band didn’t conform with the death/thrash style. They went further using vocal techniques used usually in black metal.

If this new single is a bit of what is to come then it can only be good.

You can hear Apontokation below.
