Caelestia's 'Beneath the Abyss'

Caelestia (antes conhecida por ‘Me and Myself’) é uma banda Grega de death metal melódico com uma sonoridade progressiva, que nasceu em Atenas. Para um grupo que viu a luz do sol em Abril de 2012, o pouco tempo de existência é irrelevante. Esta entidade emite uma energia que nos faz abanar a cabeça com vontade, mas que impele também o ouvinte a prestar atenção aos diferentes elementos que vão aparecendo ao longo das músicas. Esta força vinda dos deuses do Monte Olimpo é formada pelos seguintes artistas: Dimi V (vocalista), Panos V (guitarra), Vassilis T (guitarra) e por Nik P (baixo e vocais). Depois de lançar o álbum de estreia ‘Last Wish’, o quarteto progressivo está de volta com um segundo trabalho chamado ‘Beneath Abyss’ que vai atacar os metalheads em 16 de Fevereiro de 2015.

A experiência de ‘Beneath Abyss’ é marcante pelos ritmos desenfreados, pela variação melódica, pela profundidade das batidas pesadas e pelo contraste entre o death metal e um estilo progressivo mais “clean”. O álbum é, sem dúvida alguma, uma ode potente ao panteão Grego. Não só pela potência instrumental, mas como também pelos ambientes épicos das composições musicais e pela progressividade das mesmas, esta peça revela-se como sendo um grande passo para a evolução da banda. Com ‘Beneath the Abyss’ os metaleiros Gregos Caelestia induzem todos aqueles que o ouvem num espectro de largo registo e marcam bem o seu estilo. Acima de tudo e apesar do género da banda ser o evidente death melódico progressivo, da obra ‘Beneath the Abyss’ podemos retirar um metal numa onda épica. Com um carácter forte e uma personalidade bem fincada, demonstram o porquê do metal Grego ser um movimento em constante crescimento.

Em ‘Beneath Abyss’ é possível ouvir um som que relembra bandas como Epica, Nightwish, Persefone, ArkovLies e outras do género. No entanto, tem um estilo muito próprio que separa a obra de comparações - seja nos instrumentais de pouca duração, nos features (vocalista principal Bjorn dos Soilwork; baterista Markus Freiwald dos Sodom; vocalista/guitarista Andrew Geo dos AlterSelf; baterista Kostas Savvidis dos Soulskinner e ex-Nightfall; baterista Nick Yngve dos W.E.B.), ou pelo facto de apresentarem um death metal melódico muito progressivo, com uma grande variedade de influências.

A música intitulada ‘Malleus Maleficarum “The Secret Cult”’ dá a entrada ao trabalho da banda de Atenas e é uma das batidas de excelente qualidade. A quarta composição destrutiva do álbum é ‘Blessing of tragedy’ e conta com a voz poderosa de Bjorn “Speed” Strid. O ritmo frenético desta música é de deixar os cabelos em pé. A faixa título é outra obrigatória a ouvir. Este som vale bem a pena pela melodia exótica e pela brutalidade. Sem dúvida que a presença de Andrew Geo é um ganho. Não vou falar de todas as faixas pois é preciso ouvir o álbum no seu todo para o conseguir apreciar devidamente.

Muitos são os pontos positivos nas contruções musicais dos Caelestia e o facto de tocarem num registo tão amplo como o progressivo é o principal ingrediente a não deixar o álbum esmorecer ou tornar-se enfadonho. Se não fosse a variação das melodias de ‘Beneath the Abyss’, este tornar-se-ia um pouco enfadonho. Mas tal não acontece e isso deve-se às estruturas das canções e às capacidades técnicas dos membros da banda. Dimitra V. está sempre no tom e a sua voz dá uma atmosfera de profundidade e beleza. As guitarradas de Panos V e Vassilis T são potentes e encaixam na perfeição na voz de Dimitra. Os berros de Nikos P. contribuem largamente para a exploração de variação vocálica e para dar um toque ainda mais death à música.

Para concluir devo dizer que fiquei muito satisfeito ao ouvir este poderio progressivo. Aconselho todos aqueles que gostam de ambientes repletos de variação musical e misturas de estilos a darem uma vista de olhos aos Caelestia. Se gostarem de Nightwish ou Epica, esta banda de certeza que vai ser do vosso agrado. Rock on \m/

Melodic death metal (also referred to as melodeath) is a subgenre of death metal which combines the melody of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) with the intensity ofdeath metal. The genre is also known as Gothenburg metal, a reference to the city in Sweden where it originated. Originally the genre combined the harmony style and groove melodies of heavy metal with the harsh thrashing sound and vocals of death metal. Later the genre evolved due to many different influences, a notable evolution in the genre being the addition of keyboards. Melodic death metal contains more melodic guitar riffs, melodic solos, and acoustic guitar work than traditional death metal.

Background

The creation of melodic death metal has often been credited to the band Carcass, specifically with the release of their albumHeartwork in 1993. Finnish band Amorphis have also been credited with a similar title, with their release of Tales from the Thousand Lakes in 1994.The first bands to distinctly establish the genre however were three bands from Gothenburg, Sweden, who at the time, were all associated with one another: In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and At the Gates.

Some melodic death metal bands from the Scandinavian region combine the genre with other metal genres such as progressive metal (e. g.Skyfire), power metal (e. g. Children of Bodom), gothic metal (e. g. Before the Dawn), symphonic metal (e. g. Eternal Tears of Sorrow), thrash metal (e. g. Arch Enemy), groove metal (e. g. The Haunted), doom metal (e. g. Swallow the Sun) and folk metal (e. g. Falchion).

In the late 1990s, many melodic death metal bands changed their style of playing by adding more melodic elements; more melodic choruses and riffs and making more prominent use of keyboards.

Gothenburg sound

One notable contribution to melodic death metal is the Gothenburg style, named after the city from which it originated. It is not certain what band originally started the Gothenburg sound, however, it is widely accepted that Dark Tranquillity, At the Gates, and In Flames are three major pioneers of the style; however history yields that At the Gates began playing a much more contemplative and "Neoclassical" style of death metal in their early years, very comparable to the Finnish act Demilich. It wasn't until their later albums (Slaughter of the Soul being the most commercially known) when the Gothenburg sound was recaptured. Gothenburg or melodic death metal does however begin with Grotesque, being the precursor band of At the Gates. Grotesque existed for three short years, producing two demos, a rehearsal tape, an EP and one compilation album entitled In the Embrace of Evil. This appeared again in the form of a re-release split with the early At the Gates EP entitled Gardens of Grief.

The year 1993 produced a number of Gothenburg acts with debut full length albums: giving respective weight to Dark Tranquility, In Flames,Carcass and other similar bands. Dissection factually remains the direct descendent of Grotesque's style of "Gothenburg" metal (later known as melodic death metal), premiering with their 1990 demo The Grief Prophecy and the 1991 EP entitled Into Infinite Obscurity.

Regional scenes

Most melodic death metal bands are from the Scandinavian and Northern European regions, especially from Sweden and Finland. Coming out of Finland in the past decade have been few uprising bands in the melodic death metal genre, including: Children of Bodom, Insomnium, Kalmah, Mors Principium Est and Norther. While not as mainstream in Denmark, melodic death metal is popular in the underground, and some more established death metal acts, such as Illdisposed, have also acquired a more melodic sound. In recent years, the genre has gained somewhat of a popularity boost, acquiring an increasing following in North America, especially among North American fans of the Scandinavian bands which still pioneer the genre to this day; modern metalcore and later deathcore takes influence of melodic death metal with bands including: DevilDriver, The Black Dahlia Murder, Darkest Hour and Himsa. Melodic death metal has also spread to Australia with notable bands from the scene including Switchblade, Daysend, Be'lakor and Infernal Method.

Southern/Central Europe has a growing scene too, with bands such as Nightrage (Greece, Sweden, Finland, Belgium) Hollenthon(Austria),Inactive Messiah, Septic Flesh (Greece) and Disarmonia Mundi (Italy) all rising to prominence in the scene, though interestingly, most bands in central, continental Europe, seem to have incorperated the more symphonic elements that has become a popular aspect of European metal. Other minor scenes have began emerging, especially in the oriental regions, such as Japan, UAE, and Egypt. Bands such as Blood Stain Child(Japan) show this small scene developing.
