My Dying Bride - The Barghest O' Whitby (album montage)

The masters of gloom return with an epic 25 minute journey through a chilling tale of superstition & folklore.
My Dying Bride has been the leading light of doom metal since their debut album As the Flower Withers was released on Peaceville Records back in 1992. Influenced by acts such as Celtic Frost and Candlemass, the band’s heavy atmospherics have carved a huge worldwide following over the years and they remain at the pinnacle of the genre.
Following the release of Evinta earlier this year, in which the band marked 20 years of existence with a release of symphonic compositions re-imagining past MDB themes, My Dying Bride present their latest chapter in the form of new EP‘The Barghest O’ Whitby.
This single track, 25 minute epic represents the epitome of poetic grace and funeral soundscapes from one of gothic doom’s most celebrated acts. With a masterful blend of pounding guitar riffs, and sombre atmospheric passages, My Dying Bride takes you through the chilling tale of a supernatural entity hell bent on revenge.
The Barghest O’ Whitby was recorded at Futureworks Studios, Manchester with long-time production partner & engineer, Mags. The release is the first to feature violin/keyboardist Shaun Macgowan, and sees the return of Shaun “WinterTaylor-Steels to the drum-stool for this recording. The cover artwork for The Barghest O’ Whitby also appears courtesy of vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe.

Cradle of Filth - Evermore Darkly (album montage)

Cradle of Filth - Evermore Darkly (album montage) by Peaceville

The UK’s premier extreme metal antagonists retUrn with their new mini-album which includes an accompanying DVD with documentary and full live performance.
A companion piece to last year’s triumphant ‘Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa’ album, the ‘Evermore Darkly’ CD/DVD package features new tracks and rarities, with a lengthy on-the-road documentary and a full live set filmed live at this year’s graspop metal meet in belgium, as well as the video for ‘Lilith Immaculate’.
The CD features brand new track ‘Thank Your Lucky Scars’, plus a special remix of ‘Forgive me Father’, courtesy of Rob C from Anthrax, an extended rendition of ‘Lilith Immaculate’, as well as tempered demo versions of three ‘Darkly, Darkly...’ songs. The mini-album closes with a special taster from Cradle of Filth’s impending orchestral project, in the form of a haunting, classic reworking of fan-favourite, ‘Summer Dying Fast’.
The ‘Evermore Darkly’ DVD contains footage from summer 2011, when Cradle of Filth embarked on a rapid spat of tours, accompanied by two eager filmmakers. The resulting documentary, ‘You Can’t Polish a Turd, But You Can Roll it in Glitter’, combined with performance and interview footage culminates in a forty five minute film of the not so glamorous reality of life in a touring band at work and play, as they trawl their way across europe over eight performances.

Evoken - In Pestilence, Burning (from the Quietus reissue)

Evoken is a funeral doom metal band from New Jersey USA. The band’s style draws comparisons to acts such as early My Dying Bride & also Finnish band Thergothon - the name Evoken was even taken from an old Thergothon demo track.

The band was founded by guitarist Nick Orlando under the name Funereus in April 1992 & along with Rob (Bass/Vocals); Phil (Guitar) & Vince (Drums), they recorded what would be the only Funereus release, a rehearsal demo. The band eventually changed to Evoken in 1994 after several line-up changes

‘Quietus’ was Evoken’s second full-length studio album. It was originally released in 2001 & was recorded at WAVE Studios in New York during October & November of 1999. Evoken have become known for their thick walls of apocalyptic guitar on long epic tracks featuring strong, dark atmospherics, with ‘Quietus’ being a classic example of funeral doom metal honed to perfection, becoming a cult hit with fans worldwide.

This edition of ‘Quietus’ includes the extremely rare 1992 rehearsal recording from when the band was known as Funereus - the song having never been recorded for any official release. Also included is another rare track, an instrumental originally from 2004.

Unholy - Autumn (from the From the Shadows reissue)

Unholy, from Finland, formed in 1988 & were among the first doom metal bands from the country. In the band’s earlier years, starting under the moniker of Holy Hell, their style began as more a black/death/doom metal mix but progressed to a style of atmospheric, experimental doom metal. Unholy recorded 4 albums throughout their career before disbanding in 2002 & leaving a legacy as a very influential & legendary act in the Finnish doom metal scene who are still highly respected today, alongside other classic Finnish acts such as Thergothon.
‘From the Shadows’ was the band’s debut full-length album & was originally released back in 1993. The album was known for its dark textured death/doom metal mixed with some unusual & often avantgarde arrangements. Unholy’s willingness to experiment with sounds & moods helped create a strong & uniquely twisted atmosphere on ‘From the Shadows’ – slow pounding doom metal epics aided by the presence of creeping synths.
Unholy are often recognised as one of the forefathers of the funeral doom sub-genre.

Gehenna - Flames Of The Pit (Taken From WW)

Norwegian band Gehenna was formed in early 1993, with the recording of their cult ‘Black Seared Heart’ demo taking place later that same year, followed shortly by the release of the debut 7” ‘Ancestors of the Darkly Sky’. Gehenna became known for their melodic and grim black metal, with symphonic elements adding greatly to the atmosphere of the music, particularly on early releases. The band’s style progressed over the years, taking on more death and thrash metal elements at times before returning to black metal.
‘WW’ was Gehenna’s sixth album, was originally released in 2005 and was notable for the appearance of Frost from Satyricon on drums. The album saw a stripped-down approach to writing compared to some of their previous works, with these primitive black metal tracks exuding a dark, cold, yet brutal atmosphere, written by co-founding member Sanrabb, with the lyrics based around themes of war.
‘WW’ was recorded at Steel Production Studios and Realnoise Studios during 2003 and 2004.
This edition of ‘WW’ features 3 extra tracks in the shape of 2 previously unheard alternate mixes/versions, plus a live recording from Inferno Festival 2005. The booklet also features additional photos and liner notes written by the band.

Thorns - Existence (Taken From The Thorns Reissue)

Originally formed in 1989 by mastermind Snorre Ruch, Marius Vold, & Bård Faust (Emperor), Norwegian band Thorns has inspired a great number of acts such as Satyricon, Mayhem, Dissection, & Emperor, mainly due to Snorre’s highly influential style of playing & creating riffs on the early Thorns demo tapes. So impressed was Euronymous of Mayhem, that Snorre became second guitarist in the band for a while & his riffs were used in classic Mayhem tracks.
‘Thorns’ was the band’s debut (& only, thus far) full-length studio album. It was released in 2001 & is a cult slice of highly-individual Norwegian black metal, including experimental & sometimes industrial influences along with synth passages to create a chilling yet clinical slice of extremity. The album was notable for featuring Satyr of Satyricon on vocals, a duty shared between songs with the vocal talent of Aldrahn (ex-Dødheimsgard) & the recording line-up also featured Hellhammer of Mayhem on drums. The outcome was a unique & original album which is today considered a cult classic release by critics.
This edition of ‘Thorns’ contains 2 bonus tracks from the band’s 2000 demo; namely the album track ‘Existence’ but also a previously unreleased song called ‘TSoS’. This edition of ‘Thorns’ is completed by the inclusion of the rare video clip for the track ‘Vortex’, made by Halvor Bodin.

Dødheimsgard - Ion Storm From 666 International

Peaceville Records just uploaded a new public track called Dødheimsgard - Ion Storm (from 666 International),you can heard it below!

Dødheimsgard - Ion Storm (from 666 International) by Peaceville

To fans of black metal, Dødheimsgard need no introduction, being as they are one of the great purveyors of the Norwegian Black Metal creative evolution. The band was formed in 1994 by Aldrahn (Thorns) and Vicotnik (Ved Buens Ende). The early incarnation was that of a raw and melodic black metal band, with their debut album also featuring Fenriz of Darkthrone on bass.
The band quickly evolved, and by Dødheimsgard’s third album, ‘666 International’, Vicotnik had taken over a lot of the writing duties, with DHG’s style becoming more technical yet ferocious black metal, with strong experimental ideas and industrial elements. Vicotnik’s riffs were inspired by cult bands such as Thorns, and perfectly entwined with Aldrahn’s delightfully twisted lyrics and immense vocals to create something truly unique. In its ‘666 International’ incarnation, DHG – as they were later to be known – featured a line-up of well-respected Norwegian musicians including Czral (Aura Noir, Ved Buens Ends, Virus), Apollyon (Aura Noir, Immortal), plus Mr Magic Logic (Fleurety) on keyboards, as the album was constructed over a period of time. All in all ‘666 International’ is rightly regarded as a highly influential masterpiece of avant-garde metal by many since its release in 1999.

My Dying Bride - Evinta (album teaser)

Peaceville Records just uploaded a new public track called My Dying Bride - Evinta (album teaser), check it out!

To commemorate two decades of doom and gloom from My Dying Bride, the band embarked upon a special project to re-work familiar melodies and themes from their extensive catalogue into long, flowing symphonic compositions, incorporating new vocals and passages from Aaron Stainthorpe. Sharing vocals is professional opera singer Lucie Roche, a talented soprano from France.

These arrangements have been brought to life in co-operation with keyboard maestro Johnny Maudling (of Bal Sagoth fame) as well as a clutch of talented classical musicians and will be released on May 30th (May 31st US) as ‘Evinta’, as a 2 disc set, inspired by My Dying Bride’s illustrious recordings of the past two decades.

Evinta. A project almost 15 years in the making. An idea that has sat smoldering and never really had a reason to burn alive until now. 9 albums worth of darkness recreated anew to mark 20 years of MDB. Music arranged to the soundscapes of sorrows past. Finally the 20th anniversary allows us to release this music in a form it has been desperately, woefully waiting for. Enjoy the Darkness.”
