VASTUM Unleash New Track Via Stereogum

The name VASTUM is raging through the metal underground like hellfire right now, with the news of the San Francisco-area act's recent signing to the 20 Buck Spin label for the release of their Carnal Law debut this May still fresh. VASTUM's crushing death metal is crafted more in the ways of the early purveyors rather than retaining semblance to "Bay Area sound" clichés; their stripped-down attack will rip your face right off as the band prove with the thunderous midpaced stomp of the opening track from the album, "Primal Seduction," which Stereogum has graciously premiered to the public today. To be pummeled, click here.

Brand new visual evidence of VASTUM's raging live attack has just surfaced this week as well, in the form of some very ominous, black and white 8mm camera footage. Check out the footage at this location now!

The band are are currently plotting a Northwest US Summer tour and more, with details to be announced over the coming weeks. For now catch them randomly throughout their local stomping grounds.

VASTUM Live:
5/14/2011 Victory Warehouse - Oakland, CA w/ Dispirit, Anhedonist, Ealdath

VASTUM's sound permeates the most wretched, dehumanizing, old-school death metal might on Carnal Law. Culminating an arsenal of musicians with current or past ties to Acephalix, Saros, Amber Asylum, Hammers of Misfortune, Infest and more, but the band's attack is more crushing and potent than many contemporary acts flying the death metal banner.

PLACE OF SKULLS: As A Dog Returns To See European Release April 4, 2011 Via Volcom

Volcom Entertainment is proud to join forces with legendary doom guitarist/vocalist Victor Griffin (Pentagram, Death Row, Cathedral) and PLACE OF SKULLS. Titled As A Dog Returns, the nine-track follow-up to 2006's The Black Is Never Far was released in the U.S. last fall via Giddy Up Records. Recorded at Lakeside Studios in Knoxville by Travis Wyrick and Griffin with drums recorded and engineered by Mike Dearing, As A Dog Returns will finally see a proper European release on April 4, 2011 via Volcom with distribution by ADA Warner.

Said Griffin of the cooperation: "We're extremely happy with this arrangement. I've had my eye on Volcom for some time now. They're a wide-reaching company and have their hand in other markets besides music... a clothing line, skateboard/surfing apparel, and more. It's cool that a company like this loves heavy music and only puts out the stuff they really dig. It's just a whole different angle than the way labels typically work."

Already commended by critics and fans alike, Cosmic Lava called As A Dog Returns, "intense and evocative…," with Doommantia adding, "...classy, solid and creative, the musicianship is second to none as Griffin is in top form, Tomaselli delivers a stellar performance on the drums and the bass playing of Abney is spot on." Metal Register boasted, "...As A Dog Returns proves, convincingly, that PLACE OF SKULLS are much more than just a Trouble tribute band...a solid and creative heavy metal/hard rock album that will leave an imprint on many a listener." Dangerdog also gave the record kudos claiming, "'The Maker,' 'Breath Of Life,' 'Psalm,' and 'Desperation' are some of the best, somber, foreboding, and often dark, heavy/doom metal you'll find on this side of the Atlantic."

Coinciding with the European release of As A Dog ReturnsPLACE OF SKULLS will embark on a European tour with The Gates Of Slumber. Presented by Vibra-Agency, Volcom and Rock Hard Magazine, the dates are as follows:

ANAAL NATHRAKH: New Track Stream Available Via Decibel Magazine

Metal's most imaginative and punishing band returns with their sixth studio album, Passion. Scheduled for a  May 17, 2011 release date via Candlelight Records, the duo known as ANAAL NATHRAKH buck all trends. Their hallmark mix of metal, industrial, grind, and noise is virtually unmatched.

With PassionANAAL NATHRAKH take their menacing sounds into newer territory that will without doubt find the band an even larger audience while continuing to garner media’s most critical acclaim. Notes popular Canadian site Hellbound, “the UK duo has produced a hurricane of sound, with a whole spectrum of throat-wrenching vocal eviscerations, thundering blasts, grinding riffs, and lightning-speed leads.” MetalSucks proclaims, “ANAAL NATHRAKH are one of the best bands out there when it comes to evoking horror and terror,” while Metal Underground added, “hatred has never sounded as exciting.”

In conjunction with its release, Decibel Magazine is currently streaming "Paragon Pariah," the seventh track from Passion. To check it out, point your browser HERE.

Since being founded in 1999, ANAAL NATHRAKH have gained a reputation for embodying the audio essence of pure evil. Collaborations with such legendary figures as Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Shane Embury and Danny Herrera (Napalm Death), Nicolas Barker (Testament, Dimmu Borgir), Joe Horvath (Circle Of Dead Children), Sethlans Teitan (Watain) and others, have placed the band high on media as well metal fans' “must seek out” list. This, alongside headlining a stage at the renowned cult Inferno Festival in Norway (as their debut international live appearance), countless placements among "Best Album Of The Year" polls and "Album Of The Month" awards in the press, ANAAL NATHRAKH's status as one of the leading lights in extreme metal is undeniable. And growing...

For 2011, ANAAL NATHRAKH presents the digested and re-vomited results of an 18-month journey through slings, arrows and outrageous misfortune. Intended in the most scourging sense of the word, Passion is an encoded vision of agony; desolation taken as the inspiration for incalculable rage. Passion includes guest contributions from Rainer Landfermann (Pavor, Bethlehem) and Alan Dubin (Khanate, Gnaw). Glorying in their Pyrrhic epiphanies, the band have developed a deeper understanding of horror and Passion is the focused, distilled and above all bleakly triumphant result.

HEIRS: Australian Post-Doom Act's Sophomore Album To See North American Release

Earsplit PR joined Melbourne-based instrumental act HEIRS, as the band prepare to officially release their sophomore album Fowl upon U.S. shores this Spring.

Hailed as one of the best post-metal albums of 2009, the band’s debut, Alchera, established HEIRS as one of Australia’s foremost instrumental acts. Released by German label Denovali Records, the album’s accompanying tour saw the band play 69 shows across Europe and Japan, cementing their reputation for delivering an engulfing and all-consuming live experience.

HEIRS' new album, Fowl -- again released on Denovali Records -- displays a shift towards a broader sonic palette. Incorporating a pugilistic rhythmic foundation with coarse, threatening guitar textures and a stronger electronic presence, a great leap forward for HEIRS, Fowl takes their sound beyond genres and into a realm that is almost hermetic in its vision. Intensely focused yet expansive, the album is technically complex, yet uncluttered and sparse in its execution, simplicity, self-discipline and restraint are the keys to the album's success.

Having recently completed their second European tour, and having already released Fowl in Europe and Australia, HEIRS have set their sights on the U.S., and are set will officially release the album on CD, LP and digital download stateside on April 4th, 2011. Check out the track "Burrow," as well as the Fowl cover art, live footage from HEIRS and more at this location.

 -------------

"...the album's highlights -- particularly the relentlessly dark, hammering percussion of the title track and the drunken, The Jesus Lizard-on-codeine swagger of 'Men' -- are impressive enough to make this a worthy addition to any burgeoning doom collection." - Rock Sound

"The tension created by the arrangement of these seven pieces sets the listener up for an almost meditative experience, especially when combined with the right setting." - The Silent Ballet

"The night fog, the cold winds along with the infinite array of slow cars moving harmoniously combined to form a bleak image for which only Fowl is the perfect soundtrack." - Chronicles Of Chaos

"...darkness is the overwhelming texture of choice, with an inevitable release that can materialize in the form of Explosions in the Sky-esque guitar (‘Dust’), piston-like industrial stabs (‘Tyrant’), or a simple gnashing of instrumental teeth (‘Men’)." - Cyclic Defrost

The  follow-up to the ravaging Burn long-player was mastered by James Murphy and features ten tracks of flawlessly executed thrash anthems. Said Rock Hospital in an early review of the record: "Time Is Up is a killer sophomore effort by four dudes who do justice to their musical forefathers. Cliff Burton would smile on this release." Added Thrash Hits, "Playing a style of metal that has been around 30 years always runs the risk of feeling tired and overly derivative, but Time Is Up is so lively and bubbling over with personality that it never so much as flirts with those potential pitfalls." Metal Review agreed: "Havok’s purest intention is to thrash your face into a circle-pitted-pulp, and more often than not they're wildly successful."
Check out a Time Is Up video teaser below.

HAVOK formed in 2004. After two self-released albums, the band caught the attention of England’s Candlelight Records and by the Spring of 2009, the band unleashed Burn to the metal masses. The album peaked on CMJ’s Loud Rock chart at 15 and broke MediaGuide’s Top 10.

OVO Album Details Announced; Track Available For Streaming

Supernatural Cat Records have signed avant/extreme duo OvO for their upcoming sixth album Cor Cordium, which will be released on April 18th, 2011. To give the public their first taste of the release, UK-based Rock-A-Rolla Magazine is hosting an exclusive stream of "Marie," the third track from Cor Cordium. Check it out here.

The diverse, avant/conceptual ten-track opus Cor Cordium -- the title translating to "heart of the hearts" -- is an epitaph to the memory of idolized English Romantic poet and adventurer Percy Shelley. OvO hail from a realm of contaminated heavy rock, where noise elements act as breaks between the sonic deconstructive assaults as displayed on Cor Cordium. The hi-fi recordings captured on the album, for the first time in OvO's history utilizing any sort of overdubs, present a rational structure hidden under the apparent madness of the compositions.

Cor Cordium is set for release via Supernatural Cat Records -- the label who've delivered releases from Lento, Morkobot, Incoming Cerebral Overdrive, and most notably, doom trio Ufomammut -- and who also co-handle the duties at Malleus Art Rock Lab. In addition to the standard digipak version and digital download, there will also be a highly limited edition which will include both CD and LP versions as well as a DVD featuring a live concert of the band previous their previous albumCrocevia. View photos of the craftsmen at Malleus constructing the limited edition Cor CordiumLPs at this location.

With previous releases being handled by labels such as Bar La Muerte, Blossoming Noise and Load Records, and the duo having played somewhere in the vicinity of 600 shows since their inception at the turn of the century, OvO's travels have taken them from Europe to Mexico, from America to Israel, and beyond. OvO have collaborated, recorded and/or played live with countless notable acts including Nadja, KK Null, Thurston Moore, Jim O’Rourke, Rollerball, Thrones, SubArachnoid Space, Zenigeva, Lightning Bolt, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Estradasphere, Steve Mc Kay, Trencher, Ludicra, Bill Horist, USA Is A Monster, White Mice, Cock ESP, Bastard Noise, Zu, Larsen, Kill Me Tomorrow, Murder Junkies, Jarboe, A Hawk And A Hacksaw and more.

It's a full blown party; a gathering of friends old and new. This tour should be no different, save for the fact that now we are flying the Small Stone flag, and are stoked to be doing so!"

About BACKWOODS PAYBACK:

After touring the country relentlessly for five years, the singer of a Pennsylvania hardcore band decided to stop everything, lock himself in his basement and turn a new page. Armed with a four-track and a life long obsession with Neil Young, Black Flag and Sabbath, he re-emerged two days later with the blueprint for what would become BACKWOODS PAYBACK. With the help of a few like-minded individuals the band transformed into fully operational Death Star of riffage before the end of that year.

Staying true to the D.I.Y. sensibilities of their past, BACKWOODS PAYBACK spread their word one song, town and person at a time. The band toured the U.S. whenever possible, self-recorded and released their own EPs and full-lengths and acted (and continue acting) as hosts and goodwill ambassadors of sorts to touring bands from all over the world. Small bar shows led to bigger ones and weekend tours turned into month-long jaunts. After several years and countless trips criss-crossing the country, BACKWOODS PAYBACK found themselves sharing the stage with everyone from The Hidden Hand and Exodous to Gwar and Cradle Of Filth.

BACKWOODS PAYBACK Lineup:
Mike Cummings: Guitar, Vocals
Jessica Baker: Bass
Rylan Caspar: Guitar
W.S. Curtiss: Drums

The Converted:

"Exactly what big bearded men from Nowhere, PA would sound like: ball swinging sludge with a touch of blues." -- Decibel

"Backwoods Payback have the potential to make a sizable splash, and will be an easy sell to the fans of Scissorfight, Alabama Thunderpussy and Clutch." -- Metal Review

"You like heavy doses of sludge-ridden rawk like Pentagram but feel the love really coming on when you add in a steeped-in-the-still feel of the southern backwoods, this is for you." -- Ray's Realm
